It's an image of a CD. It basically zips up all the files on a CD, along with the directory structure and data architecture, as a single file which can then be transfered. Burning programs like nero, cdrwin and others allow you to burn cd images and you end up with a duplicate of the original CD.
It really does add to your productivity. Not to mention the cost savings. I have two 15" monitors running, one of which I paid a former boss $20 for. I then Combined that with an old video card and now I have twice the desktop space for a very small price.
