Why did Linux get so popular while other *nix kernals didn't catch on?

Well, yes, but try experimenting with a little extra salt (use in moderation) or perhaps a slightly sweet and creamy sauce to balance the flavors. Frankly, I don't eat OpenBSD people any more as they give me indigestion.

Maybe try a named pipe. Reader app waits on something coming through the pipe. Script fetches alarm points and dumps them down the pipes. Reader app gets alarm points and waits again. Script waits a second and fetches more alarm points. Just a thought

Floppy/Optical disk identification

That disk looks like the disks made for the Plasmon 8000 series 12 inch TrueWORM autoload jukeboxes. Unalterable, minimum data life = 100 years. This disk is probably for an older, lower capacity drive. Do you work in a bank or for a govmint regulatory agency?
