Is slot A dead?

The simple answer is that yes Slot A is dead. In fact only the motherboards that support the Slot A thunderbird are ones that are based off the AMD 751 Northbridge (the K7M just happens to be one of these) so yes there is a upgrade path for you but I think you would be money ahead to just scrap...

It's really impossible to compare them because they are used in different processing models. The emotion engine of the playstation 2 is not used in the same manner as the CPU of a computer would be. The tasks are allocated differently and therefor require different kinds of capabilities...

How can I do this using Norton Ghost?

The only problem that I see with that is that you will be ghosting save game files, settings files etc. that change every day so no matter how often you ghost you will lose some stuff. The other problem that I see is the fact that I see this as a way of being able to revert to a pretty clean...

GOrb or Athlon Stock HS?

GOrb is EVIL!!!!!!!!!! The retail AMD heatsink is actually a lower end Taisol. It is a reasonably good heatsink but if you want something better go for it's big brother the CGK760092. But whatever you do keep that GOrb away from that processor. Eric

login window at startup has got to go..

If you have it on MS Family Logon it stops asking for a password....IF you don't enter one once it's installed or delete the PWL files. So enable MS Family Logon, reboot and when the logon screen comes up just hit OK and it should never come back again. Eric

When I loaded up my new machine with Win98SE I was suprised to see an A drive show up under my computer since I don't have a floppy drive installed. I was even more suprised to see that it was reading as a 5.25 floppy drive. I've tried everything I can think of and can't get rid of the F%#@ing...

Newbie Question! How do you LAP a HSF?!?!

Here is the method I used. Adapt as you see fit 1. Go get yourself some sand paper. Get wet/dry sandpaper meant for metal starting at 400 grit and going as high (go at least to 1600 or 2000) as the store carries. I actually found the local mom & pop hardware store had a better selection...

What do you guys think of this Swiftech(?) Cooler?

That is also a swiftech cooler. That particular model does perform very well (from what I hear) but since it lacks the 80mm fan and the copper base it will be pretty easily outperformed by it's bit brother. This would probably perform as well or better than most high performance coolers on the...

Power supply question

Actually I would wait several hours MINIMUM before cracking a PSU to be safe. Of course I am insane so I usually just unplug and go but if I had commen sense I would let it sit overnight unplugged before working on it. Eric

150MHz FSB Possible?

I've heard that most if the KT133A boards will get up to 155-160. As soon as I hook up my new 1.2 Ghz processor I am going to start dropping the multiplier and raising the FSB and see how high I can take it. I don't think I will have any problems getting it that high. Eric

External IDE raid possible?

Quiet HSF

Actually the ADDA 60mm is quieter than the Panaflo. It also moves more air as I remember. For a quiet yet effective combination go with the 60mm ADDA and either the Taisol CKG742092 or the Alpha PAL6035 or the Thermoengine. This last one is the only one I havn't used myself but I should get it...

Can you use an automotive dimmer switch to regulate voltage?

I have yet to find anyting less than a thousand ohm pot at RS. Maybe the Shack here sucks (actually I already know it does) but I can't find any on their website either. Eric

Enermax Whisper vs. Silencer 275W

I think the silencer may edge out the enermax by a small margin but especially with a 15K rpm SCSI drive and as many peripherials as you have I would go any lower that 300W....in fact I'd probably go for at least 350-400. Eric

I'm just too sexy for my new Enlight 7237.........

Idea for Cool & Quiet case & cpu.

Keep in mind that you wouldn't be able to do only that. You would still need at least one case fan to cool of the video card, HD, CD-Rom and other heat producing components. Eric

Exactly, given the fact that you can unlock the multiplier, you could actually turn a 200 mhz thunderbird into a 266 or the other way around. I plan to take the 1.2gig/200mhz T-Bird and push the FSB as high as I can take it, and at the same time I will decrease the multiplier so that I don't...

Basically it doesn't matter. If you are willing to unlock the multiplier on the processor than you can lower the multiplier and compensate with higher FSB. If you want the best performance with the least amount of hassle yes the 266mhz version is worth it. For any 266 FSB Thunderbird you need...

Generic cases are ok but you are really playing your luck with a generic PSU. If it happens to work you'll be lucky but most generics don't meet AMD's requirments for the Duron and Thunderbird. Even if it doesn't meet AMD's requirments I don't think you are going to fry your processor or...

BayBuses/FanBuses/Rheostats explored

SammyBoy- the only MoBo that I know of that requires a fan to be plugged in to the header is the Abit KT7A/A-Raid. Even with these motherboards the newer revisions of the Bios have an option to turn that safety feature off. Eric
