I thought the quarter wasn't too bad for AMD. They bled $100MM by my #'s. Inventory finally came down as did AR which is why the cash went up but at the same time, it reduces their future borrowing base. The main problem they have is gross margins, they somehow need to raise them to the high...

FYI, Western Digital filed for Chapter 11 in early 90's, market cap was $135MM when they came out of it. They had terrible product (40mb 40ms stepper motor drives designed by Tandon) but good people. By filing, they got to start with a clean slate ( puerto rico ops gone, fab gone, etc...)...

Back to original topic: In any event, I think AMD will spin off Radeon/GPU/ATI to raise money. Whether they sell the whole thing, a %, private or public etc.. who knows. The valuation will obviously depend on what overhead is assigned to "ATI" and what is the agreement (royalty, etc..)...

Raja Koduri Heads up Graphics division again

AMD put all their effort on APUs which has the lowest average sell price. Plus vast majority of those customers /channel don't care if its better, they either buy on price or FUD. Not having a good foundation - x86 core + GPU architecture - exacerbated this. In hindsight, a terrible strategy...

Intel Q2 Financials- revenue down, profit down, datacenter up

Units were down 22% on DT and 12% on notebooks, completely explains Altera, gotta fill those Fabs or Samsung and/or TSMC will go right by them. Desktop is a self fulfilling prophecy though it confirms what Bethune said - you can make a pizza so cheap nobody wants to eat it.

There's no point really - don't think they care as 99% of profits are from corporate and Government - can't force a horse to drink. Also, having dealt with them, the Execs are not familiar with the territory, they rely on maps. Just look at the PC's at your local stores (the CC, WM, BB...

On this I agree with you 100%. Its the story of AMD's life since they got that x86 cross license - an Intel wannabe without Intel's wherewithal. Intel has probably made more mistakes than AMD (they're making one right now), its just that they can afford them.

Give me an independent ATI/GPU today at 1/6th the value of Nvidia and any analyst worth his salt would have a buy recommendation. How AMD GPU managed to trump Nvidia with HBM after focusing on APUs and Consoles for the past 5 years speaks volumes about the opportunity an unshackled GPU...

I don't really care but I'm assuming they spent some NRE's and intended them to be amortized into the COGS of 20nm product, probably following previous practice. More Global Foundries' stuff that probably wouldn't happen with TSMC.

It's pointless to complain about Intel's tactics. In every industry, large OEM's are conservative, using suppliers that haven't proven their worth, or worse, have proven they're not very good, is a career limiting move for a buyer or product manager. It's up to AMD to fix their "channel"...

The realization on Carrizo gpu performance, they can't make a desktop part much faster, bottleneck remains memory. Therefore, future APU's will be mobile first, "desktop" will be whatever they can extract out of the process. Which will be fine for 90%+ of buyers given that you have Zen CPU...
