hmm I'm not sure-- there is a small bar that moves across the scanning field upon which I had assumed the CCDs rest, but I would imagine that it's the standard setup since it's not too expensive a scanner. So that little bar is just a lamp, and maybe a mirror/lens to redirect the reflection...

it sounds like you just have a flaky internet connection. Check that your cables aren't crimped, try to keep your modem away from wireless and high wattage electronic equipment. But most likely it's a problem on comcast's end. Try pinging yourself, your gateway, your dns, and cnn or yahoo...
