Give me your tips/pitfalls on using SSHD

OK the first thing to remember is that they are only 5400 RPM, they SUCK once you get a cache miss, which is all the time. Your browser will be fast, sure, and boot time too. Other than that you are computing on a 5400 RPM HDD. Simple as that. I have one, and now i only use it for file storage...

Is anyone else surprised that SATA 4.0 isn't on the cards yet?

It is either 8 OR 16. so 8 is correct as well. And that has nothing to do with PCIe 2.0, as you said. You said the jump came from PCie 2.0 to 3.0, not the addition of lanes (as is the case).

PCIe 3.0 is 8Gb/s. doubling the lanes is 16Gb/s. http://www.sata-io.org/documents/SATA_Express_Article_2012.pdf The increase to 16Gb/s comes from adding another lane.

Well a good start would be to visit a review site that actually tests the hardware. They present the same test repetitively, its ridiculous. they are a rubber stamp. A 5400 RPM is a 5400 RPM, period. I have used the SSHD, and can speak definitively.

How do I setup over provisioning on new SSD to be used as Win 7 boot drive?

As long as you are in a TRIM environment, the OS will clean it for you. No need to SE. OP not needed for 99% of consumer workloads.

Find a site that tests with use or with steady state and make your decision based off that. These FOB numbers are generally worthless.

840 500gb at 50% OP or 840PRO at 0% OP for a server?

The tests at extreme systems did NOT take data retention into consideration. This is how NAND is spec'd, the ability of the NAND to hold data without power. The 830 died after minutes without power. It would have died around 1PB if it had been left without power for a week.

Thats not 'counterfeit NAND'. It is merely NAND that OCZ desolders off RMA SSDs and sells into the market. A fairly common occurrence. Yet another reason why opening your SSD voids your warranty, they do not want you to know what you are getting!

I agree, there are just so many uncontrollable aspects. None of these tools such as ipeak or swat are under any type of NDA, and by using 'secret' programs readers cannot test to see if the results are accurate. This is probably just an attempt to keep other sites from copying testing...

Im sure it is IPEAK , so there will be no TRIM during playback. There is some fuzziness as to the worth of these types of utilities that record and then playback without a filesystem.
