Why not just redo all the id3 tags and use iTunes? It's easier to browse/search music in iTunes than navigating by folder and file names.

I'd respond to that by saying that the average person doesn't know how to build his own computer from the parts he chooses nor does he wish to. That's why it's copacetic to compare Apple to Dell---they are both trying to sell the experience that what you get is fully featured and works right...

How many of you have an iBook or a Power book?

12" 1.33 GHz PowerBook with SuperDrive here. It's the best and most trouble free computing experience I've ever had. Apple does offer a student discount as well as a one-time Apple Developer Connection student discount. That should help knock a few hundred dollars off the price of a 17".

Where did the idea that people shouldn't pay for software come from?

In this scenario, Joe Mechanic would patent his idea. In exchange for receiving a time-limited monopoly to use his idea, Joe must offer up to the government patent office (and ultimately anybody) the designs and blueprints for his idea. This analogy doesn't apply well to software though...

It might be useful to have BlueTooth so you can use a wireless mouse. Not having it won't affect performance. If you do have it and aren't using it, you can also turn it off in OS X so it's not active and using battery power.

Also, right now, Apple has the Cram and Jam promotion where you get a $200 rebate if you buy an iPod with an Apple notebook. So if you sold the iPod, there'd be more money to save.

The ADC discount is well worth it. You'll save a bit more money than the normal education discount (even after the $99 fee to join the ADC), and on top of that, you'll get the latest copy of OS X (Tiger 10.4) when it comes out in the first half of next year---that in itself is a $130 value.

My B... I did miss your last post. Apple's definitely win on the ease of use factor and in troubleshooting. Plus, an iBook would be less vulnerable to spyware or viruses than a Dell. If there's a CompUSA or Apple store nearby, it might be worthwhile to check it out in person with your mom.
