Your Take on Ryzen? Worth buying or stick to Intel

I think Zen is pretty great for AMD. The problem in some areas appear to be due to L3, a little higher smt penalty compared to Intel in games, bugs, and software optimizations. I guess it would come close to Intel in games with some time and Zen+ should be equal, and hopefully frequency would be...

The Official Kaveri Review Thread (A10-7850K, etc)

I think AMD can come near Intel st and mt wise if they add an alu/agu, fatten the fpu, use lower latency l2 along with l3 and put a trace cache. Intel process advantage cannot be undermined and actually with equal process BD processors should have higher frequency than Core. Making a new CPU...

The Official Kaveri Review Thread (A10-7850K, etc)

It seems they had put too much on GDDR5m which apparently got lost due to Elpida bankruptcy. Otherwise kaveri would've been a Conroe, at least as far as the igp is concerned. The igp frequencies would've been higher too. The worst thing is kaveri is too big and the prices are too high(even...

AMD and Hynix announce joint development of HBM memory stacks

I can't recall the source but HBM will cost $20 for 1 GB initially. Even that much would be really good for an APU.

AMD on track for launch of Kaveri in February 2014

For frequency, wouldn't bulk take comparatively more power in higher frequency so mobile frequency should be higher(~equal to richland)? What do you people think AMD will do for bandwidth 20nm and beyond? There was a leaked slide from SA showing AMD was to release a GPU with stacked DRAM and...

[AT] AMD Kaveri APU Launch Details: Desktop, January 14th

It's describing mediatek/ARM products.. Just like the other slides talking about mobile products.

That slide is from Mediatek. Not from AMD.

[AT] AMD Kaveri APU Launch Details: Desktop, January 14th

Are you sure AMD was to improve the memory controller in xv? Because some of the planned 2014 xv apu features made it into this kaveri.. GCN 2.0 and context switching wasn't there in original kaveri.

[Xbitlabs]AMD Excavator Core May Dramatic Performance Increases.

Ok I mixed up llano and SB. SB igp should take less than trinity though. But comparing to k10 at least PD is a big improvement if it has basic fixes(cache, separate decoder) and the higher tdp sku's clock more linearly. 3M PD vs 4c8t would be an appropriate comparison.

[Xbitlabs]AMD Excavator Core May Dramatic Performance Increases.

Bulldozer was built for scaling up to near 5ghz frequency, which it couldn't on the glofo 32nm process. The cache latency was badly hit too and so was transistor density apparently. With separate decoders and improved cache and trace cache performance would be improved significantly without much...

    Kaveri/Huma and Light Gaming

I doubt it. DDR 3 is pretty expensive now, Sony is using GDDR 5 and the price of GDDR 5 was not much even last year iirc. I don't think there'd be a difference greater than $10 -$15/ 4 GB.

    Kaveri/Huma and Light Gaming

There is already a fm2+ motherboard with so-dimm from ecs. Plus kaveri is incompatible with fm2. So if the bandwidth problem is solved it should perform better than 7750. Next apu gen is compatible with fm2+ too. The rest depends on your needs. If you want it now, get the gpu.

Counting the success of Kabini & Temash

Thanks for the reply. There were rumors of and having bigger die area for higher frequency and yields in bd. llano scaled pretty much perfectly though with horrible yields. On topic amd was going on about win 8 tablets earlier and now we have so little. No cheap ultrathins with quality screen...

Counting the success of Kabini & Temash

Would that also be part of the reason for the apparently very poor density of bulldozer? A 12 core 4ghz bulldozer would have done great. 45nm bd was 8c right? Also would it have been better for amd to focus on ipc given how better mobile trinity is though llano is as efficient as phenom 2.

    [Digitimes] Kaveri delayed

That 'excavator' die shot is probably 28nm fd-soi. Now that they are pretty much leaving high performance server and using ARM they have very less reason to aim for cores / mm^2. The cores are such a small part of the whole chip. If they can match intel ipc and retain clocks, they can be very...

    [Digitimes] Kaveri delayed

iirc we didn't have much info on jaguar or the gpu families either. We might get hard numbers some time soon though. If steamroller is another 15%(including clocks) there is no need for AMD to go about advertising it as such. Also that pic seems like the design goals of the big cores have been...

    [Digitimes] Kaveri delayed

If you look at various reviews online, llano cpu only power consumption was rougly equal to 3ghz pII / AthII. So I'm not sure good things can be said about glofo 32nm, at start at least. Btw trinity doesn't have rcm(or it's disabled), maybe richland does. The improved frequency is due to...

KitGuru tested the FX9590... it's pretty bad.

I don't understand what's the long discussion for. AMD found a few chips would could clock really high and decided to sell them at a premium. It's not in millions and mostly meant for people chasing records or very high clocks. If you want to criticize AMD, criticize the high end cooling buyers...

    First Steamroller processor core exposure

I think AMD is going for 28nm fdsoi and high ipc next (after kaveri). That leaked module shot is real. Here's why: 1) AMD said that they'd use 28nm for a longer time and though they'll stay 1 - 2 nodes behind intel they can compete by stuff like rcm and hdl. Plus new leaked glofo slide says...
