need vcr + video card to transfer vcr taped movies to hard disk

There's a fair chance that one of your local photo/video societies, history societies or art universities has a working setup to convert video tapes. A phone call and some of your own time investment could make that setup usable to your purposes. (If not then think about donating your setup...

Videocards with "Cryptocurrency" keyword, how (or what) exactly?

Hello there, some of those videocards have no display outputs, they were specifically 'slimmed down' to be as cheap as possible. However, most of those slimmed down models were sold in Asia as far as I am aware. Over here in NA/Europe you are most likely looking at a normal videocard that got...

need vcr + video card to transfer vcr taped movies to hard disk

Hello, if you don't want to go through a company offering that service, then your best bet would be to buy a late model 4-head VCR. Even then you might have to do some light repair work yourself, there's a fair chance that the belts are brittle by now or that one of the capacitors started...

How do you think Intel will segment its Coffee Lake desktop line-up?

I think I can see their original marketing plan: New tier, 6C12T @420$ unlocked, 320 to 380$ locked, 4C8T moved to 300$ and lower (a drop of 50$), 4C4T moved to 210$ and lower (a drop of 30$), 2C4T to fill up 80$ to 120$ segment, Everything below that moved to Atom. ...with a couple of 6C12T...

    Laptop upgrade - is a i5 2.27 Ghz >>> over Athlon X2 QL-62 2.0 Ghz, both dual core?

On the CPU side - yes, all of them are solid upgrades. On the GPU side - I think the Lenovo Thinkpad with its Intel HD 3000 is probably the way to go, that should be some 3 to 4 times faster than a geforce 8200m depending on game? The Toshiba Tegra is faster as well, but not by much. The Dell...

    Mass Effect: Andromeda Benchmarks [PCGH]

Oh I don't consider them to be perfect (or else I would have never started posting on AT). They have the same issues with rushed reviews and short embargo times, though they generally call the short review time out rather than doing a review with underhanded commentary resulting in forced...

    Mass Effect: Andromeda Benchmarks [PCGH]

Sure. "There are two different AA settings in the new ME: FXAA and temporal. Both are post processing AAs, but temporal is preferable. FXAA doesn't work on vegetation and will cause heavy flickering on it. Temporal fixes that by applying a temporal component (sic). Though it does produce a...

    Mass Effect: Andromeda Benchmarks [PCGH]

Haha, if only you two could read german. The article paraphrased says "difference between x8 and x16 can only be found by nitpicking". The article also mentions that "having Tesselation activated costs performance even when there's nothing obviously tesselated in the scene". And the benchmarks...

    Mass Effect: Andromeda Benchmarks [PCGH]

I can see a difference in the rubble right next to the MCs feet between Tesselation off and on/optimized. And there are some minor differences in the geometry of the left rock, though those could be LOD differences. I don't think I'll buy this game any time soon, there's something seriously...

    4k 144Hz GSync Monitor!!!!!

I think there's a misunderstanding in this thread over what a reduced color space actually ends up looking like. If we're talking about 4:4:4 down to 4:2:0 then that's a massive reduction in sharpness. Here's a demonstration what 4:2:0 does to moving fonts: And here's a still image: Yeah...

NVidia and AMD driver performance review [HardOCP]

I do not argue against the validity of frametime numbers. However, I do have issues with statements like "everyone has a different sensitivity when it comes to perceiving micro stutters" because that turns every analysis ad absurdum, even frametime graphs. It's a classical moving target excuse...

What's up with the hyperbole? So, https://www.computerbase.de/2017-01/radeon-hd-7970-290x-fury-x-vergleich/2/#diagramm-deus-ex-mankind-divided-2560-1440 I assume this is something you can't explain? Both DX12 and the games you mentioned have seen improvements since they launched.

NVidia and AMD driver performance review [HardOCP]

You know, that was more a rhetorical question than anything else. The reason you brought this up is only because you want this to be the case. You superimposed your own assumptions over a review that gives no reason for conjecture. It's actually rather surprising to see a [H] review where they...

    38" Acer 3840x1600 w/ Freesync - Looks Sexy!

I disagree to some extend. Pixel response time is a property of the panel, refresh rate is a property of the scaler. There's nothing stopping a company from combining a terrible panel with a great scaler or vice versa. The reason why you see a correlation is because currently there's money to be...

    Monitors without a power brick

Tftcentral usually lists if a monitor has a power brick under the accessories category in their features table. I believe the Dell Ultrasharp series comes with internal PSUs as well, at least the U2717D does. As for CCFLs, it's pretty much as you said, most TFTs come with LED backlighting...

VA, IPS or just TN for new monitor?

This. And there's also the point that quite a number of IPS panels come factory-calibrated in their colors (->tftcentral, everything they don't complain about is good enough). That probably isn't something you'll notice when you first use a calibrated monitor, but it's something that stands out...

NVidia game codes now difficult to resell?

So, anyone want to do a comparison what is faster: Changing a GPU today with registrations for warranty extensions and promo codes or changing a GPU 20 years ago with all the restarts you had to do in Win 95 to get a working system. I can see why they would do this, doesn't mean I like it.
  21. P

Anyone downgrade native res to improve performance?

Nope. I would hate to go back down to a pixel density below my 27" 1440p monitor (108 ppi) and I would hate to go back down in monitor diagonal as well (to keep a high ppi on 1080p). We'll have faster GPU options by the time HDR starts being relevant anyways, so that's a non-issue for me as well.

    Radeon Vega Architecture Preview Thread

There are some stupid SFF cases out there that are a pain in the butt where you have to take build order into account and squeeze cables through small channels but the Nano S certainly isn't one of them. That case can even take a full custom loop and be sort-of easy to work in as well...

    Radeon Vega Architecture Preview Thread

Just to give a point of perspective, the Define Nano S is actually rather spacious and can house even monsters like the Radeon R9 295x2 length wise. You'll find lots of different opinions on that topic. I would say open air with two 140mm low speed front fans pushing air into the case will...

[Rumor] EVGA Partnering With AMD On Vega & Radeon RX 500 cards

Aside from this probably being false - I wouldn't be surprised if we see a market consolidation in the next two years, with one or more brands disappearing. There are simply too many SKUs and brands in the major markets right now and new brands like Manli trying to enter it too.

Nvidia rolls out game streaming on a GTX 1080 cloud for $2.50 an hour

I can hook a Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor to a Lumia 950. I would actually pay for this if it made that combination with Witcher 3 happen, if only as a party gag. As a service on my desktop PC - completely uninteresting.

AMD Freesync - Why Fullscreen only?

No, but I do think that the amount of people that do not check the frequencies before buying their monitor and yet can tell the difference after buying said screen isn't particularly large. Google: "Acer Predator Z271 review" - second hit. They're always up there if they have a review for a...

AMD Freesync - Why Fullscreen only?

You seem to think that those Gsync panels must be better because they cost more, but in reality quite a number of them are now rather old panels. Also, without research you'd have a fair chance of buying one of those Monitors that can only do Gsync without ULMB like this one. I really don't...

AMD Freesync - Why Fullscreen only?

There's nothing distasteful in equating profit maximization with cash grabbing. Yes, but does it work? Case in point, I can currently choose between 103 FreeSync monitors, 73 of them were first listed in 2016. Compared to that, I can only choose between 35 GSync Monitors, 17 of them were first...

Using 4 monitors. How can I go up to 5 or 6 monitors?

I think all Nvidia cards since at least Kepler should support four monitor streams, but you'll land in adapter-hell if you do that because you probably need something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAA0T55R0350&cm_re=display_port_hub-_-15-158-403-_-Product The...

Minimum PC Parts needed to Drive an RX480-4GB

460W at the wall is around 420W actual load for a 90+ gold PSU, so my generous calculation of 460W load is perfectly acceptable. It's actually rather overstated, [H] uses a highly overclocked CPU with that as well. A modern PSU is fine handling spikes beyond its rating and you would have to...

Minimum PC Parts needed to Drive an RX480-4GB

Generous calculation: Two RX480 would be 170W*2= 340W. The rest of your system adds about 120W at load. That's about right for best efficiency of a good quality 550W PSU (yours is a good quality one). You'll be fine unless you got a lemon PSU. edit: Also, your CPU is fine too. No bottlenecking...

    Vega/Navi Rumors (Updated)

One of the reasons that AMD didn't show off the card was most likely that they had a ghetto modded cooling solution on the card: Link to the article: https://bbs.io-tech.fi/threads/ensipuraisu-amd-vega-radeon-instinct-mi25-32-ytiminen-zen.8056/ That's a tower cooler for a CPU I'd say. Should...

AMD Linux Driver Efforts: Not accepted by Kernerl maintainers

I'm not arguing against that. But those mailing list participants tend to dramatize the situation to support their position. Like Dave said, it's his only lever and he is willing to hold onto it. Alex from AMD does have a valid point, hardware complexity and -features are currently outpacing...

AMD Linux Driver Efforts: Not accepted by Kernerl maintainers

I think I can understand both sides. AMD wanted to write a self-contained driver that reuses as much code as possible for all operating systems. The positive side of that is that this would have rapidly accelerated their Linux driver development (since it profits from the Windows development)...

[TonyMacx86]Possible Polaris 12 GPU and Refreshed Polaris 10 spotted in macOS Sierra drivers.

Based on how AMD has handled GCN in the past I'd say there are two logical slots where a third Polaris SKU would slot in: The first slot is below Polaris 11, at ~90mm², ~1.8b transistors, 512 shaders and 64 Bit GDDR5 bus. This would be a cost effective replacement of Oland and Cape Verde and a...

working mans guide "how to finance a high end gaming habit." :)

I did already get the highest consumer platform i7 ;) The other points are valid, 1500$ only gets you so far when you spend 650$ on the GPU. I know by only buying a 1070 I could spend more on a modern case, better cooling, probably a new HDD if the old one is from 2011 and I would opt for a...

working mans guide "how to finance a high end gaming habit." :)

I went with the initial premise and it does fit into the budget. There's no shame in spending as much as you want to spend, there's only shame in thinking that you need to spend that much to be "a high end gamer" or something along the line.
