[Various] NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Review Thread

AMD being quiet about Pascal doesn't mean anything. Why would they say something if they're screwed?

[vrworld] Pascal Secrets: What makes Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 so fast?

There were rumors(not particularly reliable rumors) of a large die gaming optimized part(GP102). If that's true there would be zero reason to sell GP100 as a consumer part.

How many FPS can you notice?

Depends on how fast stuff is moving, how much stuff is moving, how much contrast and visual noise there is, refresh rate, etc. For something like moving a cursor around, I probably couldn't tell the difference between 65 and 70fps on a 60hz display, but I probably could tell the difference...

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

I'd like you to come up with an example of a biased conclusion. I.e. A situation where AMD had a clearly better product, and PCPer still pushed Nvidia. If you can't do that, then maybe you should question your assumptions. PCPer did the exact same low framerate investigation with the g-sync diy...

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

Actually, I can come to a conclusion like that. I can make that assessment confidently because I understand how an oscilloscope works, and what the waveform on the scope should look like. If it was working with a 7ms lockout, you'd see a big peak(25ms) followed by a short peak(7ms) when running...

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

What are you on about? PCPer still uses FCAT for their video card reviews. People were talking a lot about frame pacing because there was a big difference between AMD and Nvidia. Now there isn't, so why would people spend a lot of time talking about it? It doesn't matter where the tools come...

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

The tearing is pretty obvious in that video, but right now I'm curious about the AMD guy on the beyond3d forums. I looked through the posts in that freesync thread since march, and didn't see any new information about how freesync is implemented, just the blatantly obvious "It should be able to...

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

How about instead of listening to what AMD has to say, you look at the screen of test equipment hooked up to an actual monitor? Mute the video if you think the reviewers are biased, the correlation between framerate and refresh interval speaks for it's self: https://youtu.be/VkrJU5d2RfA?t=1410

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

The monitor doesn't change the time it takes to do a refresh, but the driver won't send a new frame for another 18ms after the monitor is done with the repeat. It's definitely a bug, and AMD's behavior here is really suspicious.

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

AMD claims missing a frame deadline causes a 7ms lockout, PCPer's testing demonstrates a 25ms lockout. This article basically says PCPer is wrong, but without actually testing the issue, just taking AMD's word on it. This is an AMD driver problem that AMD is trying to deny exists.

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

I am NOT talking about subjective statements, I'm talking about factual representation of behavior below 40fps.
  12. S

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

Wait just a minute here. 25ms + 7ms = 32ms. 30fps = 33ms The freesync monitor should be displaying new frames exactly on time here, just like the g-sync monitor. What gives?
  13. S

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

PCPer actually tested the behavior, techreport appears to be taking AMD's word for it. It's completely ridiculous to trust AMD's representation here without actually testing it.
  14. S

[techreport] BenQ's XL2730Z 'FreeSync' monitor reviewed

Yes, the monitor is supposed to be able to accept a new frame after the 7ms refresh, but that can't happen unless the driver actually sends that next new frame. It's pretty silly that they drew their conclusions without actually testing that. It wouldn't be particularly hard to test either...

AMD Freesync Monitors & Reviews Thread

Look at the post I was replying to. Running at max refresh to reenable overdrive is kind of incompatible with a framerate cap that keeps you in the VRR range, is it not?
  16. S

    Do NV GPUs support FreeSync?

I'm pretty sure Nvidia is working on an adaptive-sync implementation for mobile g-sync, but don't expect them to enable that for desktop monitors until there's a business case for it. Basically, you need enough freesync monitors in circulation that the GPUs sold to people with adaptive sync...

But at the monitor's max refresh rate you also get either v-sync input latency or tearing.
  18. S

AMD Freesync Monitors & Reviews Thread

Adaptive vsync is not adaptive sync. Very similar sounding, but adaptive v-sync is just normal v-sync that turns off when framerate gets too low.

Overdrive can cause reverse ghosting if the overdrive setting overcorrects at all. The BENQ is a TN panel.

AMD Freesync Monitors & Reviews Thread

Sometimes it's reality that's slanted, PCPer was just the first to point out the big issues. It has been confirmed by a polish review site.(It includes video comparing the monitors at various refresh rates) http://pclab.pl/art62755-4.html If there is a pessimistic attitude, it might be...

AMD Freesync Monitors & Reviews Thread

There is visible overshoot on the ASUS in that photo, at least for the areas that were white in the previous frame. It looks black on a dark blue background, maybe it's not visible on your monitor? edit: the background looks dark blue on my TN monitor, but dark gray on my CRT, the overshoot is...

AMD Freesync Monitors & Reviews Thread

It's not in the VESA spec, because ensuring minimum framerate is the responisibility of the DP source, the a-sync spec just covers the interface stuff. There's either something wrong with AMD's drivers, or the monitors can't handle a quick frame immediately after a slow one. Hopefully it's a...

That would still be AMD or Nvidia's fault, for giving a subpar monitor freesync/gsync certification/branding.
  26. S

AMD Freesync Monitors & Reviews Thread

No, there are two fallback cases, if you use v-sync off as the fallback you get tearing, but a lot less input lag and maybe less judder.
  27. S

AMD Freesync Monitors & Reviews Thread

But the low framerate fallback case should be running at the monitor's maximum refresh rate, in order to minimize the severity of the judder and tearing. Right now, it's just sticking at the minimum, so it looks worse than a fixed 60hz monitor when you're below the VRR region.
  28. S

Should you be compensated for the GTX 970 issues and spec changes?

My opinion is kind of split on this. Yes, Nvidia screwed up the marketing, but it doesn't change the performance from what the reviews/benchmarks showed at release, so it's hard to claim Nvidia was deliberately misrepresenting the product. It would be a completely different story if the video...

[PCPER.com] Nvidia: We're not planning support for Freesync

I'm not surprised at all, because variable refresh wasn't actually demonstrated until a year after that article. Check the framerates in the video. It's essentially a comparison of v-sync at 30hz to v-sync at 50hz.
  30. S

[PCPER.com] Nvidia: We're not planning support for Freesync

They had positive feedback because it actually exists now. That variable refresh removes judder and tearing within the frequency range of the monitor was never in question. The questions that still need to be answered are on the quality of the implementation. This means testing input lag and...

[PCPER.com] Nvidia: We're not planning support for Freesync

I've said all along that Nvidia support for adaptive-sync is contingent on widespread adoption of adaptive-sync monitors. They will support it if and when the increased sales of video cards to people with adaptive-sync monitors outweighs the decreased sales of g-sync monitors. I don't think...

[AMD] World's First Shipping FreeSync-Enabled Displays (CES)

No, not even free as in speech. Freesync is AMD's proprietary variable refresh driver solution, it's not like AMD is sharing that with Nvidia or Intel. Adaptive sync is a VESA standard, but it's still not open source.

Does conflict free minerals affect your decision to buy Intel CPU?

If AMD produced a better product, I would buy it. The only company I currently boycott on ethical grounds is Nestle, and that's hard enough to keep track of.

The Kerbal Space Program (KSP) Thread

For the "test part" contracts, you either have to stage the part when all the requirements are met, or use the "run test" option in the right click menu when all the requirements are met. any good articles on screen tearing?

If you're not using v-sync or variable refresh, you get tearing: If your framerate is much higher than refresh rate, you get several small tears on every refresh. If your framerate is half your refresh rate, you get a big tear every other refresh. If your framerate is equal to refresh rate...

All Samsung's Ultra HD monitors in 2015 to support FreeSync

AMD said they'd start sampling displays in september and october. Is that not a good enough reason to expect a review by now? AMD's whole PR strategy was trying to convince people these displays were coming out a lot earlier than it was reasonable to believe.

All Samsung's Ultra HD monitors in 2015 to support FreeSync

The main issue with freesync is that AMD's PR resulted in a lot of misunderstanding. It's good that Samsung is supporting adaptive-sync, but we still need to see whether it performs well, and what it will actually sell for. What do I mean by performs well? AMD's responsibility: 1: It has to...
