Thanks for the help! A new CPU fixed the problem. There was some oxidation on one of the pins on my old cpu. 40 bucks for an x5675 wasn't a bad upgrade either. Currently running 4.2GHz at 1.35V Scored a 952 in cinebench

Windows 10. If I go into the bios it only detects 8GB. There is a "Memory-Z" function in the bios that will freeze the bios if I attempt to view the specs of dimm 3, which is the dimm not being recognized

I use 200 baseclock with 20 multi. Don't remember voltages, but I could look them up.

x5650@4Ghz is still a beast, haven't had any problems with games. Not too much of a power hog either, the system uses 240 watts in a gaming load with an rx 470

Ok problem solved, I found a 5770 mac edition for a reasonable price.

Update: Just figured out that it won't work out of the box like i thought. Although I'm still looking for a recommendation.

Today I had the luck of acquiring a Mac Pro 3,1. Unfortunately, it is missing both a video card and hard drive. I can get a new hard drive easily, but the video card is very confusing. From some ebay searching it looks like the officially supported cards are way too expensive for what they are...

Just got it to boot thanks everyone. Turns out for some reason it wouldn't boot with both monitors connected after i reset the cmos, weird. No more memory overclocking for me haha.

Here the procedure I took. First I tried doing it with the battery. I took the cmos battery out, unplugged the pc and discharged the power in the capacitors using the power button. Then I waited 5 minutes, After that didn't work I unplugged the PC, discharged the power and moved the jumper...

I didn't touch the voltage. I'm not 100% on the power supply, but it was working perfectly fine yesterday. Ill try another. It seems like the CMOS is just not resetting.

Yes its very nice. Went from 315 in cinebench to 910. The only downside I'd say is the lack of sata 3, usb3, ect.

I have the ebay board that burpo linked. If you end up buying it pm me because there is some extra documentation you will need to flash it. I'm running at 4GHz rn with x5650.

Ya this was a fun project! Couple scary times (though i messed up the bios upgrade), but it went pretty smoothly. After I sell my old motherboard and cpu the net cost will probably be around $100. i7 will probably go back on ebay. Old system had 350 cinebench, new has 850! Games are no longer...

Your tips worked and the faster clocks are working now. Was able to overclock to 200 blck with turbo off using only +240mv volts. Seems stable, will run some more stability tests. Trinamo, what memory ware you using? I am looking to get some 4GB dimms to replace the 2GB ones I'm using right now.

I did a quick any dirty overclock, just raised bck to 166 MHz. Got a lower cinebench score and only cpuz recognized the higher clocks. Any ideas?

Finally got the time to flash the motherboard. Now running A10 bios with the xeon successfully installed. Got a 650 cinebench score at stock. Temps are really cool. Will post some bench results and screenshots later. Overclocking next. Thanks everyone for the help.

Dug through some documentation, and it seems that the i7 980x and by extension the xeon cpus are not supported on this board until the alienware bios has been flashed. So looks like I'm going to have to grab an i7 920 off ebay, unless any forum members have one to sell.

Assembled the system on my desk, fans spun, but no POST. Tried memory in different slots and whatnot, but to no avail. I'm going to take the cooler off and see if i damaged the socket pins or something like that. Maybe I got a defective CPU.

UPDATE: Received my CPU today, motherboard is coming tomorrow. Are there any XPS motherboard owners who can give some tips about updating the bios? I read the link from above, but the I'm not comfortable with the process yet. Thanks!
