It does sound like a video problem, I had the same type of lock ups when I forgot to move the agp divider to 2/3 when I move from a Celeron to a P3. The system would run Office fine but anything graphics intensive it would just lock (even playing videos). Get that AGP hotfix, latest drivers for...

The optical mouse you tried was a PS/2 version wasn't it? I got the same thing when I used the PS/2 adapter but soon as I switched to USB the problem went away. Both MS and Logitech's offerings in optical are excellent!!!(Yes I have both!)
The fan is cosmetic. The chip runs cold :), so don't worry about not getting a fan because the fan does NOTHING except chew power that could be used in OC it.
