Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

Thanks for the screenshots.. you can't get previews of images though? If I had to do that it could be an alternative but I don't know if that would be better than the SSD route.... If the RAMdisk doesn't work it's an alternative.

Yeah, I think it was on the Dataram site that it said this. I can look around to see if anyone has done it successfully.

I have never tried to work that way.... it doesn't seem manageable to me. Could you do a screenshot? Have you ever heard of anyone opening up so much info with a batch file like this?

mfenn, I read that the dataram software was for accessing databases... how is a database different?

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

Because it's an immense amount of info - files/documents. The way I imagine it is that I would have too many open documents to make sense of. With the RAMdisk the files are organized... and immediately ready to open as if they were opened already. Unless there is another way to do this..

I may not be expressing what I am imagining properly as well.... I am not sure of the proper terminology. I don't take it as an insult.. I sure don't claim to be that knowledgeable... But one thing I am knowledgeable about is my project and what would benefit me...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

I'm not understanding this though because Photoshop does the same thing. You save to HDD with Photoshop from RAM as well... It periodically saves just like the RAMDisk software.... If I lost a little data it wouldn't be the end of the world. I could re-do that work just like with Photoshop.

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

I am not sure if this is going to work for my needs, Sleepingforest. With the batch file wouldn't everything open onto your desktop? Or can you load things into RAM so they are all ready to be opened without actually being opened?

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

So just do a search for .BAT file? Is this how they are commonly used?

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

The RAMdisk isn't wasteful to me though because I value the speed and convenience it provides in my situation. How could I search for the info you are talking about to load the files I need? Would I have to make something to load every piece I need? That could be a real pain... with a RAMdisk I...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

I asked that earlier... I asked if there was some way to load these things into memory automatically at startup.... I did a search for this and the only thing I found to do this was a RAMDisk... Also, I said I could change the allocation in RAM for PS vs research depending on how much RAM I...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

One thing I don't understand is why people are so concerned with boot times... yeah if you are starting your PC and it WASN'T getting all the files and programs you need ready and it was STILL slow THEN I could understand people being upset about boot times.. but these are two totally different...

This is the mistake I think is being made.. I don't ever recall saying that 16GBs wasn't enough for ME to use Photoshop... If I did it was unintentional and I was referring to my overall usage... not just Photoshop. And when I say multi-tasking I don't mean music etc.. I mean many different...

You are ignoring other things I said though Sleepingforest.. from the beginning I said I needed all the RAM for Photoshop AND multitasking.... I also didn't say I knew I would have enough room.. I said I wanted to make sure I had enough room... The whole reason I said that is because I don't...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

I really don't think it will be an issue Sleepingforest. I think I can easily fit my whole project in RAM without worrying about running out of room. Also, I didn't say I didn't need the speed of the SSD... I said I don't need that much storage space for the project I am working on that you...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

There might be another solution to this... I just learned about "prefetch" last night... basically with a RAMdisk all I am doing is making my own controlled prefetch system. But is there some way I can set up my PC so that Windows ONLY has the files I need available to prefetch and ensure that...

I said though that my use of a RAMdisk would be based on how much RAM I needed in Photoshop... I also didn't want to bore people with my unusual ideas... that's why I just said I would need a lot of RAM... And once again... we keep forgetting what Adobe themselves said.. they said your...

This is what your PC does anyway though... this is what Photoshop does with it's scratch drive.. what Windows does with it's file paging... All programs I am aware of work this same way... I am just essentially making a special program that has my whole project in it. What are RAMdisks for if...

I posted a quote about real time mirroring.... just like Photoshop does with your data that it's working on in RAM... My HDD is going to be backed up.... And the RAMdisk is going to be backed up on the HDDs.... Just like your Photoshop projects are normally backed up on your HDDs... This is...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

I think it depends on what you are doing with it... If I was only using it for Photoshop I would agree. If I was just using it for Photoshop it wouldn't be much of a benefit. When I say "my project" I mean all the data and programs for my entire project... or most of it... Though I will only...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

I think what people are missing about using the RAMdisk for data is that the software I am using loads the data into the RAMdisk drive automatically... and it backs it up automatically. I realize you would never want to store data on a RAMdisk that isn't mirrored because you would lose it all...

Seepingforest... if you are not into RAMdisks... do you know of some other software that I could use to automatically put all the elements of my project into RAM before I go to use things? Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

Keep in mind I am not batch rendering a huge amount of huge images or something.. so I doubt I will be pushing Photoshop RAM to the extremes many of these pros do. But I want to be certain I have enough and then I can play with how I allocate things between my research and the comic and even...

Sleepingforest, isn't that CPU a 8 core? I thought I read on the Adobe site Photoshop doesn't benefit from more than 6 cores... I need to read about that processor. Also, if that 2 TB drive dies then I'm screwed. That's why I wanted to make sure I backed up that data. Also, I don't think...

If Photoshop doesn't use all the RAM it could then why does Adobe tell you to max your RAM before getting a scratch SSD? Also, the way I understood it is that the scratch disk is just to appease Photoshop because it makes you assign one. If you never exceed the RAM limit then it isn't an...

Getting ready to order... still have a couple questions

Let me put it this way... if I can have everything I need in RAM... then why do I need an SSD? Later, I wouldn't mind some SSDs, because then I can have everything I need and the kitchen sink.. but I don't need the kitchen sink right now. :D

I don't think my RAMdisk will run out of room, though. That's the whole key. This is why I said if I worked on immense projects then this system wouldn't work. If I worked on many large projects constantly and had to reload them constantly this wouldn't work. That is why I was saying when I...

The RAMdisk software has a feature that loads all the files you want on your RAMDisk at startup and saves it at shutdown. Also, I am considering using a RAMdisk as a way of storing all my relevant research to a project so it is always ready to be instantly accessed. OK, thanks SleepingForest.. sorry to be a pain. I think I am just in a unique situation... most the time I think you are right with your philosophy. And I can mess around with how much RAM I have allocated and if there is some space that I never use I can try the RAMdisk. I think the issues...
