AMD Vega (FE and RX) Benchmarks [Updated Aug 10 - RX Vega 64 Unboxing]

That's true, they do design a SoC a generation. That hardly compares to a full stack of CPUs for laptops, desktops and servers, including designing a chipset for each. But even if we were to split that in 2 for both companies (not at all realistic, especially this gen with Ryzen, Epyc and...

AMD Vega (FE and RX) Benchmarks [Updated Aug 10 - RX Vega 64 Unboxing]

That's true, to an extent. Hardware is slower/more expensive, especially the more complex your design gets. There are quite a few reasons that most players in the CPU/GPU are very much the big guys (Intel, Samsung, Qualcom, etc.), and many are very specialized (Intel, Nvidia, AMD, ARM, etc.)...

AMD Vega (FE and RX) Benchmarks [Updated Aug 10 - RX Vega 64 Unboxing]

The answer, as many things in life, is money. Nvidia spent $351M a quarter on R&D since 2014, according to this data. * AMD spent $253M a quarter on R&D since 2014, according to this data. * * Note: Last 13 quarters; dates are a bit different for both companies. Now, even if we assume that AMD...

    Vega/Navi Rumors (Updated)

That's not entirely accurate. People forget this market, but it's a pretty big one. At my university, Titans are used as a machine learning and neural nets GPUs. They allow the university to buy more cards as they are cheaper than pro cards, and still have ample memory and have many CUs...

    SLI has gone to crap.

Well, I have an AMD card, so no real power limit as far as I know. For NV, I'd use some moded BIOS, Skyn3t ones are usually great. He usually takes more care of the Classy and Kingpin ones. That's what I did when I had a Classy (but I didn't watercool so it wasn't as important).

    SLI has gone to crap.

They do, especially if you add more voltage. So, the better the cooling the better the OC. Especially if you go with a full water block. Personally, I think I'll skip this gen and put a G10 on mine.

[WCCF] AMD Radeon R9 390X Pictured

So, here's my prediction. I think it works well with most credible leaks so far. I think that there is a Fiji card that just "underperforms" the 980Ti, but that one is not the full Fiji. I can't find it now, and this thread is way too long to look through (tried searching to no avail), but...

    Quad fire 295x2 question

I think you should wait, and see what happens. If you still think the 295x2 is the better option, well, it'll be cheaper. Another option, which you may have not considered, and will be cheaper and not too far behind in performance, is going trifire with a 295x2 and a 290x (obviously go for a...

    Return rate of graphic cards

I think that a lot of these Radeons were returns for issues like a fan going from mining. A friend of mine got 20 TRI-X cards for mining, and had to return 4 of these, only for fan issues. Now, one of those returns ended up being really bad, but that's another issue :)

    [PcGameshardware] The Witcher 3 Benchmark

Well, they have time. As for the rest, well, I believe that they don't get access, or at least same level of access, but have no way of knowing for sure. It's just a hunch. But I really hope that AMD will come through and will get a driver either on release day or a couple days after at the...

    [PcGameshardware] The Witcher 3 Benchmark

I think eblveryone is forgetting one thing. nV has already released the drivers for the game, so NV cards are optimised for it. AMD, on the other hand, hasn't. So, we should see at least a small improvement on most AMD cards in the next few weeks, and the comparison is not exactly apples to...

    Cheap R9 290 (X)? from Amazon.uk ($103 for US + shipping)

As much as I agree that prices in Canada are crazy, what people are asking for on Kijiji isn't necessarily what they're getting. You can get a TRI-X 290X for $300 on Kijiji. I know. I am selling one On topic, I wonder what they'll do, as was just mentioned. Let us know, those that ordered.

[WCCF] AMD Radeon R9 390X Pictured

Whereas I agree that some people have that problem, not all of us. I can tell you that some of the reasons for my upgrades were exactly the VRAM. I went 780 ti -> 290x just for that basically. So, I don't think it is always the case. Also, keep in mind that the 970/980 came out a little while...

[WCCF] AMD Radeon R9 390X Pictured

@RS great post. I agree with a lot of what you wrote, about value and things like that. But, even if there isn't a single game that currently requires 4GB at lower resolutions (1080p/1440p), I do believe this will happen in the very near future. Because of the integrated memory system of the...

Thermaltake Water 3.0 Ultimate VS. Corsair H105

Thanks! I must say, I only had one TT thing ever. It was a case, and I hated it. But that was a long time ago, and I was thinking of giving them a second chance. I also saw the NE reviews, which is why I was considering it (for me, that's the best source of user reviews on tech stuff)...

Thermaltake Water 3.0 Ultimate VS. Corsair H105

Hey All! So, I was planning going custom loop, but unfortunately, that just won't happen. Don't have time to set it up, and tweak it, as I upgrade rather often. I'm also quite done with giant air coolers, for the same reason - accessing RAM with Noctua NH-D14 is annoying as hell. So, that...

Apple Monitors (Why do they look so good?)

Fair enough. We all have different vision and preferences. I prefer having control over each element which is what MS was trying to do. And I don't use 1:1 anymore. That was indeed too small. I'm using 1920:1200 which is more than Apple offers. I just don't think that everything Apple does is...

Apple Monitors (Why do they look so good?)

I understand how Apple scaling works. I'm saying that it doesn't allow me to do what I, personally, want to do - have access to "all" pixels and choose where to scale. I like the fact that in Windows I can select which things to scale, and if the developer followed the guidelines it will look...

Apple Monitors (Why do they look so good?)

Exactly. So effectively, on an Apple display, you have a lower resolution, but much sharper. Now, that is great, except that some users actually want more real estate. The Windows scaling method has been used since Vista. The problem, just as you say, is developers not conforming. Even Chrome...

Apple Monitors (Why do they look so good?)

Apple didn't do any "magic" and does not have amazing scaling. They used a simple trick that makes things look good, but doesn't really give you the desired resolution. They do what's called ubersampling in Witcher 2 - they map a few pixels to each 1 pixel that is supposed to be displayed. In...

Looking for advice on a new monitor

I was just about to mention waiting a bit for more free/g sync monitors to come out. I'm considering both options you are and that's what I'm waiting for. That and also something along these lines. IPS, 120Hz. Now they should add free/g sync and higher res. That would be perfect.

MSI 290x Lightning - RMA process [Updated: Replacement in transit!]

I had no such hard locks. The only thing I have is occasionally (not too often though), a crash when waking from sleep. But I have a messy windows install, so could be that. Will re-install windows soon, hopefully it'll go away.

Question. Has anyone tried the G10 bracket with the Lightning? I know it *shouldn't* work, but it doesn't mean that it *wouldn't* :) I might be looking to get a bracket, as the waterblocks are hard to get in Canada and are pretty expensive. Thanks! EDIT: grammar

[GeForce Forums] Nvidia has officially blocked 900M overclocking

Interesting. I know they (and many other manufacturers) had an issue in 2010. When I was working as a PC tech, we had lots of these coming. NV used cheaper TIM IIRC and many motherboards died, or just the GPUs. One way of fixing those was cooking the boards in the oven :) OT, the Macbooks are...

[GeForce Forums] Nvidia has officially blocked 900M overclocking

Well, such chips exist. They're called EEPROM which are a special kind of Read Only Memory - ones that can be written once. It shouldn't be impossible to at such a chip to the circuitry as they are quite common in things like that. In fact, they even usually use a pretty "low tech" method to...

RMA approved for $740 store credit. Now what?

Here are my suggestions. 1. Buy a stop card - probably a 290/x until GM200 comes out. Sell and get that (or maybe 2). 2. Buy one 980. Wait for GM200 and see the reviews. If it's much better, sell the single 980 and get the Titan/980Ti or whatever it'll be called. If it's not that great, get...

If you see the correct % with the fan program, you have the newer BIOS and don't need to flash. I can't remember how high of an OC I got, because I'm currently running just a bit above stock. Need help please for GPU upgrade path.

Let me add to what I wrote before. If you live in GTA, then a quick look on Kijiji shows quite a few 290s and 290x's for under $300. If you go for an Asus, I know that in the US their warranty leaves a lot to be desired, but from what I hear (never had to RMA their stuff before) from quite a...

Need help please for GPU upgrade path.

Well, I've had a few mined cards, and the only real issue is the fans. If you put on a G10 plus some AIO cooler, you should be more than ok. But I honestly don't think that you can beat that price/perf ratio.

    MSI Lightning 290X Owners Thread

Well, you can check out the owner's thread at OCN, they found that it doesn't matter what serial you have. I used it, without checking (after reading their thread though) and it works fine. Like I said, the best way of knowing if you need it is to check if you can control the all 3 fans in the...

    MSI Lightning 290X Owners Thread

Well, it's not an extra heatsink, it's instead of the lower one that is on the card. Since most people don't use LN2, it wasn't on. You might want to check the MSI forum for the newer BIOS. I got mine long after the fix and it wasn't flashed with that BIOS. If you install the fan software and...

Please rank your favorite R9 290 and R9 290X video cards

I believe I tried with my 290x's. I believe the 2 best ones I've tested (had about 6-8 that I tested before settling for the 2 I kept for a while, until I replaced them), if I recall ran at ~1140 on the core and 1300 on the memory. That was on air though, but I'm not sure if water would have...

Please rank your favorite R9 290 and R9 290X video cards

Don't know how it compares to the Vapor-X, but the Lightning definitely beats the TRI-X. It is cooler and quieter, not to mention has a much better PCB, better OCer and is of much better construction. Both are great cards but they're not in the same league. For some reason I haven't seen any...
