In the long run the more cores the better, though by the time that happens most chips today won't be up to speed. The i3 is no longer viable for a new gaming build, that is a fact. You can still have one for another year or two I guess. I gotta upgrade my chip soon so I can future proof it some...
Interesting views about how long it would take for games to be optimized for 8 cores. If that is true PD may not be a good investment for the short term.
I have the Rosewill Green series, it's a little loud at times but has served me well. It's only $65 and would fit your needs. Plus it's single rail and delivers 50 amps on it (630w model)

I've played it on my FX 4100 and it runs just fine. It's not a very demanding game for modern hardware. If your main concern is playing FSX then even an APU would be fine.
Stagnation is pretty bad. If you have a 6 year old PC that runs fine for your needs, why would you buy a new one? Also Microsoft could up Windows' system requirements, that would hurt at first but help in the long run.
Yes, but assuming the FX 8xxx is faster than the i5 in terms of multithreaded performance, it would benefit more IF PC games are coded to have use 8 cores. That is a really big IF right now.
I'm young, so mine is quite short but...
2000: Pentium III 500E 500 MHz (Coppermine)
2007: Core 2 Duo E4400 @2.00 GHz
2012: FX 4100 OC'd to 4.2GHz
And hopefully...
2013: FX 8320 OC'd to 4.2-4.5 GHz
