SLI combines the power of both the cards.
So yes, it would definitely give you more FPS , but off course they are stuttering issues sometimes.
New drivers are continuously being released though which help in improving the SLI gameplay.
As the resolution increases the GPU's have to work...
I don't see what the hue and cry is about.
When Physx came out, it was totally proprietary. It still is.
Now AMD comes out with something that's better optimized to run on their cards,

2x TressFX @ 2560 x 1440 res of my monitor would kill the game play for me.

As for Nvidia, shit... they need to update drivers soon !!
At that resolution no matter what game you play maybe besides Crysis 3 or Metro you are fine off
A 7870 XT joker for half the price of Gtx 680 can handle 4XAA like a charm in battlefield 3
