SSD Sata 2 vs Sata 3 user experience?

If you're motherboard has an extra pcie x1/x4 slot available, then purchasing a pcie x1/x4 sata iii adapter maybe the way to go to improve bandwidth for your Samsung 840 Pro SSD. This will bring your SATA speed from SATA II speed to slightly below SATA III speed in throughput. Just make sure...

I did some rough calculation between a sata iii & ii in raid-0: sata iii raid 0 [2 ssd samsung 840 pro] = ~1000 MB/s sata ii raid 0 [3 ssd samsung 840 pro] = ~810 MB/s The difference in total bandwidth is ~20%. Using the fastest random r/w iops SSD(s) in sata ii raid 0 [3 SSDs] will bring it...

If you run Windows in SATA II, the following will run in SATA II mode such as: Directx 11, GPU drivers, internet/wan/lan drivers, audio/sound drivers, virtual memory, online communication headsets & anything else that windows need to run your games. It feels crippled. :( "25% OP" seems too...

    Xeon for workstations

System specs? Since it's a 5+ year old machine, does it have a SSD? Many data intensive programs/softwares are choked by the mechanical-limitation of hard drives.

Can't you find room for a ~7gb O/S in your primary drives? :) If you have a pci-e x1 slots available, then a sata iii controller will run @ 5 Gbps [max based on pci-e 2.0]. I would not use such a small bandwidth controller for a raid 0 though.

It sounds like you're stucked with SATA II ports. Choosing the fastest random r/w iops SSD would be important in your selection process: Vertex 4 128gb has the best random iops in raid 5 mode.

Because Intel only provides two miserable ports, why do you think? Then transfer/switch the 2 plugged SATA III devices/drives, to the SATA II ports. Then use the 2 available SATA III ports for raid 0.

    Amd 635 IIx4 to ivy bridge.advantages?

Install a RAM drive of 2 to 3 GB based on your 8GB RAM size. It's free. Easy to setup. You can use it to migrate all your Windows TEMP & TMP [temp storage files], & 1GB browser cache, & windows virtual memory of 1GB if you don't want to deactivate it. An SSD is fast, but it is in order of...

A top-of-the-line SATA III SSD deserves the best SATA III port in any computer. :-) My 2 Samsung 830 128gb in SATA III raid-0 has been stable for 6 months now. I do backup important files regularly though. If you don't have SATA III ports, then SATA II in raid-0 or raid-5 is probably a good...

Adding RAM to aging computer; worth it?

Staples had sales of Kingston V300 SSD 120GB for ~$73 & Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD for ~$90 which ended Saturday. I bought this one for my new laptop. There are always sales of SSD. I have a similar computer at work & it feels slow without a SSD. The HD LED is always lighting up whenever...

    3770k now or 4750k/4770k later...

To the OP, does your system has an SSD? If no, then upgrade to a tier-1 SSD first, then you can decide if you want Ivy Bridge, or Haswell, etc. It may even hold you long enough before the upgrade itch come back again. :-)

Adding RAM to aging computer; worth it?

The OP said he/she can get RAM for ~$20. Add converter ~$3 & SSD 64GB to 128GB for ~$50 to ~$80. Total ~$100 upgrade for a possible big gain. In fact, I may even skip the RAM or just bring it to 512mb [~$10] & use the SSD for virtual/page file. This will feel like a rebuilt car for minimal...

    3770k now or 4750k/4770k later...

I have an Ivy Bridge i5-3570K system that I built 6 months ago. It's great! OC @ 4.3ghz & with Samsung 830 raid 0, ram 2133mhz & radeon hd 7950, everything is seriously fast. I think, the key is having pci-e 3.0 bandwidth with at least 3 pci-e x16 slots. GPU saturation is a long way off...

Adding RAM to aging computer; worth it?

Using an IDE 40-pin to SATA converter will enable the computer to run a modern SATA SSD at ATA-100/133 speed. The converter is only ~$3 at eBay. Cheap experiment, but the payoff is big. Later, upon getting a newer computer when the time comes, then migrate the SSD with Windows 7 for TRIM support.

Adding RAM to aging computer; worth it?

I have such an adapter & it works as a data drive. My 2 comps has SATA ports, so I've never tried using such an adapter/converter as a system boot SSD drive. WinXP should work & be recognize as a IDE SSD drive. The SSD will need to be re-aligned after full install, or clone process. It...

Adding RAM to aging computer; worth it?

The motherboard is probably ATA 100/133 based on this wiki reference. The original hard drive is probably a 4800/5400 RPM with very slow access time. SSD even if running at a significantly reduce speed of ATA 100/133 is 10 to 30X faster than a hard drive.

Adding RAM to aging computer; worth it?

I seconded adding a SSD! An SSD is a significant boost/upgrade to a legacy computer. If no SATA ports, then use a SATA to IDE 40-pin adapter. Ebay has lots of them...

    pci express x1 sata card?

I have this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816124042 It can do Raid 0/1 & has a Marvell controller. This one has max speed of 5 Gbps instead of 6 Gbps due to the Marvell controller. I think, all or most of the Marvell chipset is capped at 5 Gbps, or SATA 2.5 speed. If...

Fix SSD alignment on work computer

    1. Burn a disc to create a bootable GParted media. 2. Set your computer to boot off the dvd/cd drive. 3. For safety reason, unplug all your drives leaving just the mis-aligned SSD. 4. Click on all default settings to start GParted. 5. Follow this instruction...

Paging File on boot SSD or second HDD?

I've been using a RAM drive for almost 3 years now to store all temp files of Windows, IE & Mozilla Firefox for my 3 computers. This avoids unneccessary write wear on all my SSD [4]. I have not used Windows Pagefile/Virtual memory for a long time now, since I have lots of RAM. Even my 7 years...

How to make my laptop respond faster? Add memory or Graphic card change?

Suggestions: 1. Download & install TCP Optimizer to improve internet input/output throughput. 2. Download & install Dataram RAMDisk to use a temp storage for browsers & windows. If you have 8gb ram, then 2gb ram drive for temp storage. If 4gb ram, then 1gb ram drive. This will help in avoiding...
