Can't you find room for a ~7gb O/S in your primary drives? :) If you have a pci-e x1 slots available, then a sata iii controller will run @ 5 Gbps [max based on pci-e 2.0]. I would not use such a small bandwidth controller for a raid 0 though.

It sounds like you're stucked with SATA II ports. Choosing the fastest random r/w iops SSD would be important in your selection process: Vertex 4 128gb has the best random iops in raid 5 mode.

Because Intel only provides two miserable ports, why do you think? Then transfer/switch the 2 plugged SATA III devices/drives, to the SATA II ports. Then use the 2 available SATA III ports for raid 0.

To the OP, does your system has an SSD? If no, then upgrade to a tier-1 SSD first, then you can decide if you want Ivy Bridge, or Haswell, etc. It may even hold you long enough before the upgrade itch come back again. :-)

I have an Ivy Bridge i5-3570K system that I built 6 months ago. It's great! OC @ 4.3ghz & with Samsung 830 raid 0, ram 2133mhz & radeon hd 7950, everything is seriously fast. I think, the key is having pci-e 3.0 bandwidth with at least 3 pci-e x16 slots. GPU saturation is a long way off...

Using an IDE 40-pin to SATA converter will enable the computer to run a modern SATA SSD at ATA-100/133 speed. The converter is only ~$3 at eBay. Cheap experiment, but the payoff is big. Later, upon getting a newer computer when the time comes, then migrate the SSD with Windows 7 for TRIM support.

The motherboard is probably ATA 100/133 based on this wiki reference. The original hard drive is probably a 4800/5400 RPM with very slow access time. SSD even if running at a significantly reduce speed of ATA 100/133 is 10 to 30X faster than a hard drive.

I seconded adding a SSD! An SSD is a significant boost/upgrade to a legacy computer. If no SATA ports, then use a SATA to IDE 40-pin adapter. Ebay has lots of them...
