  1. What's the difference between the Corsair CS and CX series?

Don't buy a CX series. Just don't. They are completely terrible value. They are only rated for 35c at maximum load, which is insanely low. Also meh efficiency, meh fan, meh build quality... They just aren't worth the money considering what you can get for a little more. CS is a bit better...
  2. Skylake 6600K high uncore power at idle

I'm a little confused what's going on here. I have a 6600K and an MSI Z170A Krait Gaming. At idle, according to hwmonitor, my CPU uncore power is 11W. This is just sitting at the desktop, web browsing, etc. But if I fire up a 3D game, it drops down to 3-6W. What's going on here? I've...
  3. Dead Toshiba(Hitachi) DT01ACA300 with under 400 hours in use.

400 hours is definitely within the infant mortality range, where you have high drive failure rate. I have 3 of these drives, two of them with over a full year of solid 24/7 operation, and one with about a month on it so far.
  4. Can a desktop SATA HD be connected to a laptop internally?

The answer is no (probably). The 2.5" Laptop drives (and SSDs) only use +5V. 3.5" Desktop drives also require +12V. The SATA connector may have pinouts for the +12V, but I'd be shocked if your average laptop actually have +12V running to the actual SATA connector on the motherboard. There...
  5. Cm elite v2 500w and 550w

It's a mediocre at BEST PSU with absolute crap capacitors that will likely last 2-3 years on the high side. see http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=386 If you are looking for a new PSU, look at an EVGA 550 Supernova G2, or a Corsair RM550X. Really, other than...
  6. Seasonic 400w platnium goes into protect when using 175w R9 nano

    No, get a good 550W. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438053
  7. Would a 550W PSU be good for this setup?

It amazes me how uninformed so many people are when it comes to power supplies. The "bigger is better" mentality is sure alive and well. Let's look at this. The R9 390 is a 300W TDP card The FX8320E is a 95W TDP CPU So 400W so far. Let's allot at worst another 75W for Motherboard, RAM, HDD...
  8. Hard Drive Reliability Stats for Q3 2015 (Backblaze)

So you wouldn't buy likely the most reliable drives today because some IBM drives a couple decades ago had problems? Man this is like the grandpas who won't buy Chevy in 2015 because he had a '75 that "had a few problems so they are all junk". I've never had good luck with Seagate drives, and...
  9. Hyper 212 EVO fan clicking; replacement recommendation?

You can actually order replacement mounting hardware from coolermasters online store which includes mounting brackets. Also, I used a Cooler Master blade master 120, which is actually superior to the stock fan on the 212+ evo anyway...
  10. Revamping an old desktop

Of the two, the optiplex is probably the better built system, but you could have issues with either. This was the era where Dell was using the nippon chemi-con KZJ and Rubycon MCZ series mainboard caps. The KZJ especially are prone to bursting and leaking. We are in the process of a Windows 7...
  11. R9 280x not working at all (reaching end of my rope :( )

Why buy an nvidia card, when you could, you know, RMA the card to the manufacutere since it sounds like it's a defective card? :|
  12. Would a 550W PSU be good for this setup?

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1368?vs=1402 The intel CPU is $194 and the AMD is $145. It gets even more embarassing for AMD when you look here. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1197?vs=1402 The i3-4360 is the same price as the AMD, while being a dual core, and still manages...
  13. Intel HD 530 seizuretastic with intel driver

As it turns out it seems either the CPU or motherboard is faulty. I put in a spare video card and started getting the same BSOD at boot, and crash at desktop when the drivers are loaded/installed. With a 750 and with an r5 220 as well. But if I put a video card in the bottom pcie slot...
  14. Intel HD 530 seizuretastic with intel driver

Yes, and yes. I even tried installing the previous driver version. Every time I reboot Windows reinstalls the driver and I have to go in and uninstall it so my computer is usable. Also, I ran a pass of memtest86+ just to make sure that somehow bad RAM wasn't the culprit. It came back clean. Do I...
  15. Intel HD 530 seizuretastic with intel driver

While my EVGA GTX 970 SSC goes off for RMA (for the SECOND time) I have to use my integrated graphics. Funny thing though, when I install the intel graphics driver (including when windows 10 tries to install automatically) THIS happens (epileptics beware)...
  16. Antec NE650M

You can say that all you want, but I've seen plenty of bulging teapos in older power supplies, whereas I've never seen a bad NCC/Rubycon PSU cap. If I'm buying a high-end/quality power supply, I want Japanese brand caps, not Taiwanese or Chinese.
  17. Antec NE650M

Teapos are "all right" but I personally would prefer something with Rubycon, Nippon chemi-con, Sanyo, or Nichicon. (Not that you really see Sanyo or Nichicon in SMPS very often)
  18. Antec NE650M

The Neo Eco C series was in fact made by Seasonic. However, it does use non Tier I capacitors on the secondary. Of the two 400C I've had, both have NCC primary cap, but one has Teapo on the secondary, and the other has Su'scon.
  19. Seasonic ... fan up or fan down?

Fan-cooled power supplies mounted in bottom-mount cases should always be mounted fan facing down. That is how these cases are designed. In most cases tehy ahve vents in the bottom that allows the fan to pull in cool air and then blow it out the back. I don't really get why people find it so...
  20. Seasonic ... fan up or fan down?

No. Fans DO NOT blow air OUT of the power supply. They blow it out THROUGH THE BACK. Where the power plug goes. It sucks it in through the fan grille, and blows it out the back. You always want your power supply facing down, in a bottom-mounted case. Your case will either have a grille with a...
  21. can corsair vs650w power zotac gtz 770

I'm running a GTX 970, 4.3ghz 2500k, 4HDDs, 2SSDs, Sound card, and 24GB of RAM on a XFX XTR 550 PSU. 650W is more than enough for any single graphics card setup.
  22. Corsair quality seems to have dropped quite a bit, which brand is a good replacement?

15% of reviews reporting DOA != 15% DOA rate. More like .15% at most. Corsair PSUs are fine. Not my first choice, but there is nothing wrong with them.
  23. Will USB ever be replaced by something that isn't such a hog? Edit: It was the laptop

Your issue sounds more like you are using a non SSD drive and expecting it to not slow down when you are heavily reading from it for semi long periods of time. I do not have this issue on any of my computers.

  27. Dependable battery backup for computer system

I have an APC 550 for my main box, and a Tripp lite 850VA for my server/pfsense firewall currently, both work well.
  28. Improving Internal Laptop Cooling (Latitude E6430)

The GPU itself is actually on the CPU die, not on the northbridge chip. The northbridge on newer motherboards does not get hot enough to need an actual heatsink. If it doesn't come with one on it, it doesn't need it.
  29. All I want for Christmas...

I can handle one less SATA port, but the lack of DDR3 is painful, since I currently have 24GB of DDR3, I would already be downgrading to 16GB one way or the other, but the performance advantage (or lack therof) of DDR4 makes it a terrible value proposition. I get that DDR4 is the new hotness...
  30. All I want for Christmas...

As the song goes, all I want for Christmas is a Z170 mini ITX motherboard with Intel GBe, DDR3 support, and a minimum of 5 SATA III ports. Won't one of these companies please oblige? So far everything announced is DDR4 only. There really is no good cost/benefit for DDR4 over DDR3-1866 right now.
  31. Question on psu fan

    Power Supply
  32. Skylake Z170 Motherboard Round-Up

...And none with ANY DDR3 slots. Guess I'm not upgrading for a while. I have 24GB of DDR3-1866, I see no reason to spend the money on what will likely amount to a minimal performance difference for DDR4. Not to mention I'd end up with only 16GB so it's pointless.
  33. How close am I to my max ?

You should be 100% ok if you do.
  34. How close am I to my max ?

See, I agree with that. But I think unless he is running furmark and linpack all the time, I doubt he will often see above 500W very often. His estimate of average being around 350W is around my estimates as well. 400 tops for an average, which is well within the capabilities of his PSU as long...

  36. Making computers available over the internet (Remote Desktop)

Teamviewer would probably work here, it's not ideal but it's at least nearly idiot-proof. Otherwise, I'd see about setting up an openvpn setup, and integrate into Active Directory (if you are using AD), and create an RDP link on their desktop once they are connected. Under no circumstances...
  37. Best WiFi router for home use

Personally I have a Archer C5 with high gain 9db antennas on it, and I have it centrally mounted in the 1700sq/ft Ranch style house I'm living in, and I get consistent 50db in every corner of the house, and the basement, and about 55-60db on the back porch, with my 7260AC equipped laptop. I can...

  40. Info About EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0+?

I have this card myself, and it's great. Personally, the difference in power consumption and heat alone makes it worth it over the AMD cards. One nice thing is that it runs fanless until it hits 62c, and even under furmark, I've never seen it top 72c. At that point, the fan is only running...
