For an 8 mile commute, this bike should be fine. There's a lesser chance of a flat with mountain bikes and as long as this one is in good condition, there should be plenty of life left on it. Price is decent.
Check out the Schwinns at your local target or walmart. They have some decent hybrids there for sub-300 price point. I am riding the tourist and it is a great bike. Looking to get a road bike in the future.

i know it's rough right now, but see if you can help some mom and pop shops with computer problems or get employed by someone while you are studying for those certifications. that is the best course of action for the summer. but then you're going to be giving up fun. this is a decision you...
i'm gonna start writing a faq for this. this topic has come up numerous times over ATOT.
(1) which certs do you have?
(2) job experience is just as important as certs.
certs get you the money, but experience gets you the job. keep that in mind.
you can also bring up explorer and go to the file and hit properties and select it graphically. but doing things manually is a lost art, so i respect that :)
if that's the case, then it might be possible since it will put him in the 60k/yr range. i don't know what the job market is like in canada, but i know they don't pay a whole lot. also, geographic location matters.

a heavy racquet doesn't necessarily mean that the head is heavy. depending on how they balance the weight, you can have a lighter racquet be heavier than another. personally, i hate the hammer series, just from the weight distribution.
i would only suggest a hammer or a sledgehammer for (1)...
