Need help working around Orwellian employer...

Some of the latter posts have actually been helpful. (Muscles you are insightful.) For you IT guys, I would suggest that a little communication with the guys who are affected by your whims would go a long way toward clearing up misunderstandings. (The IT dept. doesn't have the reputation that...

Need help working around Orwellian employer...

Could you guys at least answer a few legitimate questions? Our IT director certainly can't be bothered to educate us as to how this affects us. (And none of us have ever had to deal with censorship and tracking before. To me this is akin to tracking cookies or spyware.) By the way, we...

I'd hoped for a technical response, not a lecture. (And my job has nothing to do with the government or national security.) Nevermind.

Need help working around Orwellian employer...

OK, here goes. My networking skills are somewhat limited, so I hope that I can explain this in such a way that one of the geniuses here can help me out. I work for a fairly large national company in a job where myself and my coworkers sit around for anywhere from 12 to 48 hours waiting for...

    Chaintech 7VJL- KT333

Wow, that board has all of the features that I want. It looks like they gave a lot of thought to the design. I think I'll get this board instead of waiting on the KT400 any longer.

    forest serv.emp.starts fire...

Ironically, her duty at the time was to "enforce the ban on illegal campfires". The USFS makes such a big deal about enforcement of draconian restrictions on the national forests and yet it is they who are the worst culprits. (Like the big fire in NM a few years ago.) I used to hike every...

You would be amazed at how good your life is when you put things in perspective by seeing just how bad life can be for others. Volunteer somewhere. If you don't like people, volunteer at your local humane society or animal shelter.

    Gigabyte GA-7VRX vs. GA-7VRXP

I have also been considering buying one of these two boards. Here in the U.S., the price difference is as little as $15 (Pricewatch) so the scales tend to tip towards the GA-7VRXP. (I personally think that $15 is justified by the RAID, LAN, and improved sound.) Edit After reading the...

    MSI KT3 Ultra auto-shutdown woes

Do you have access to a digital volt meter? You'd want to check the 5V rail from the power supply while it's under load. (During that brief interval before it shuts off.) I'm betting that it's going to be low. If it's low all is not lost, as your power supply may have a potentiometer that...

    MSI KT3 Ultra auto-shutdown woes

I wouldn't rule out the power supply as a potential source of the problem. I think that it's unlikely that you would have kept getting DOA hardware new in the box. (Both motherboards and/or a CPU.) I also think that it's unlikely that the Asus fried your RAM. The power supply was common to...

    Can't Format... Help

Did you boot from the C drive that you were trying to format? Make a startup disk and boot from that, then try to format the C drive from the A drive. (Or the ramdisk it makes, depending on which operating system you're using.) It should proceed with the format without any problem. ax57

Alternative Word Processor to Microsoft Word?

I'd highly recommend "Staroffice 5.2". It's a free office suite that is compatible with MS Office file formats. (Word, Excel, etc.) Here's a link where you can download it but I hope you have broadband, it's nearly 100 MB. Download "Staroffice 5.2"

windows has detected a registry/configuration error!

Bad RAM will cause the problem you're describing. Try either reseating the RAM or substitute some different RAM to see if that fixes the problem. If there's a heavy accumulation of dust in the SIMM slots you might want to vauum that out too.

Can I shorten my ATA-100 Rounded cable...

I've shortened them without experiencing any problems. The trick is to get a good, clean cut. The best tool I've found for the job is the Craftsman "Handi-Cut".

How/Why did my hard drive develop bad sectors?

One way that it can happen is to bump or jar the hard drive while it is operating. The head can crash into the platter and do physical damage which results in bad sectors. Other times they just fail for no apparent reason. ax57

New music compression format better then mp3?

I read about "MP3 Pro" the other day on some site, it's supposed to be released soon by Fraunhofer (sp.?). Supposedly, it offers either the same quality at 1/4 the file size or twice the quality at half the file size. It's also backwards compatible to existing MP3 players, but they...

    Switched a Duron700 to 850Tbird--system now freezes

You didn't change the correct voltage. The CPU core voltage default is (I think) 1.7v. The maximum for most MB's is 1.85v. You may have to change jumpers on the MB or you may be able to change it in the BIOS, depending on the MB. ax57

    Switched a Duron700 to 850Tbird--system now freezes

What about the CPU core voltage? Did you change it when you changed the CPU? The Thunderbird may need a higher voltage than the Duron did. You might consider bumping it up a notch. ax57

WINDOWS 98 SAYS I HAVE CORRUPT REGISTRY!!! *HELP*

I would agree that it's probably flakey RAM that's causing the problem. If it's not the RAM, it could be either the L1 or L2 cache on the CPU. You could try reseating the RAM, changing the order of the SIMMs or DIMMs, remove the sticks of RAM one at a time, cleaning the contacts, etc. You can...

Windows 98 registry problem @ install... Odd Problem

I've seen this problem before and it was bad RAM in one instance and bad cache on the CPU in another. Since you eliminated the RAM as the source of the problem, go into your BIOS setup and disable both the L1 and L2 cache, then try a clean install. It will be excruciatingly slow, but if it...

Help!!! My *second* K7T Pro motherbaord just died agian in the same way as the first one. What is wrong??

LTE, This is really a long shot but... Does your M$ keyboard have a conventional keyboard connector or is it USB? Incompatible RAM killed MB?

Oz, I've seen a motherboard zapped by incompatible RAM. A friend bought a new mobo, CPU, and 32 MB of RAM back when SDRAM first came out. Everything worked fine with that first DIMM that we installed. About a month later he bought a 64 MB SDRAM DIMM,(different type), and I went over to his...

Neos, You could put both devices on the same channel, but you should leave them the way you have them now. (Faster access on both the HD and CD-ROM when they're on their own controller.) And yes, you could have a total of 4 devices. If you add another device to one of the channels don't...

    K7T Pro 2 and K7T Pro 2-A

There are indeed two different versions of the K7T Pro 2. (Henry Kuo speculated about this in an earlier post.) One is the K7T Pro 2, the other is the K7T Pro 2-A. As you might have deduced, the first has the 686A southbridge, and the latter has the 686B southbridge with ATA 100 support. You...
