Question Are Dell P-series (Professional) and U-series (Ultrasharp) stands compatible?

Thanks for the info, and love the old school handle.

Question Are Dell P-series (Professional) and U-series (Ultrasharp) stands compatible?

Does anyone know if stands from Dell P-series monitors will fit U-series monitors? I know that E-series stands, while they look nearly identical to U-series stands, will not fit U-series monitors. The measurements of the tabs on the stand that insert into the monitor's attachment point are...

Question Possible to daisy chain MST hubs?

Also, I heard from StarTech, which makes MST hubs. MST hubs cannot be daisy chained. So that's out, but as prior post demonstrates, you can create a daisy chain of monitors from a MST hub.

Question Possible to daisy chain MST hubs?

If anyone is wondering, the answer to a related question - can you daisy chain monitors off of a MST hub, the answer is yes. Picked up a daisy chainable monitor today. Connected as follows: video card DP port to 2-port MST hub 1 port on hub to regular DP monitor 1 port on hub to daisy...

Question Dell monitors input source keeps reverting to Auto Select from DisplayPort

I have a couple of Dell monitors (different models) with DP ports in a multi-monitor setup (5 monitors). To prevent the wake-from-sleep issue (where Windows doesn't see DP monitors right away and thus rearranges windows to fit the monitors on HDMI and DVI), I have changed the input source on...

Radeon R9 270 - cannot display HDMI and 2xDVI simultaneously. Hardware limitation or workaround?

Yep. I asked in the main graphics forum, but maybe you know the answer. Can MST hubs be daisy-chained? I.e., connect video card to MST hub. Connect another MST hub to the first MST hub. Possible so long as you stay under the 4 x 1920x1080 display limit? thread here...

Radeon R9 270 - cannot display HDMI and 2xDVI simultaneously. Hardware limitation or workaround?

Not according to this table: https://community.amd.com/thread/231248 Looks like R9 290 should be able to handle 3 non-identical displays on DVI and HDMI ports (note there is no footnote on this configuration as there is with the R9 270; the footnote mentions the requirement that the DVI ports be...

Question Possible to daisy chain MST hubs?

I've got a video card with one DP port. I also have a 2-port MST hub, which I can connect to the card to drive 2 DP monitors. If I get another 2-port MST hub, can I daisy chain them to drive 3 DP monitors? I.e., video card > MST hub > 1 DP monitor and 1 MST hub > 2 DP monitors The card is DP...

Radeon R9 270 - cannot display HDMI and 2xDVI simultaneously. Hardware limitation or workaround?

Figured it out. The card can support 3 monitors on the HDMI and DVI ports, but the catch is that the monitors connected to the DVI ports must be identical. That's what the missing footnote refers to. All of my monitors are unique, so the card by itself is maxed out at 3 displays (1 on DP, 2 on...

Radeon R9 270 - cannot display HDMI and 2xDVI simultaneously. Hardware limitation or workaround?

I have a Radeon R9 270 card with the following ports: 1 x DP 1 x HDMI 2 x DVI I can get 2 monitors working on the 3 HDMI/DVI ports in any combination I want (HDMI and 1 DVI, HDMI and the other DVI, or 2 DVI), but I cannot get 3 monitors working simultaneously. All 3 monitors will show up in...

AMD Radeon R9 270 - can this drive 4 monitors?

I've got an AMD Radeon R9 270 in my Windows 7 system, and it has 4 ports - 1 DisplayPort, 1 HDMI, 2 DVI. It can drive 3 monitors in the following configs: DP and both DVI HDMI, DP and 1 DVI It cannot drive 3 monitors in this config: HDMI and both DVI I've tried using the Windows 7 Screen...

Are Dell Ultrasharp monitor stands compatible with other Dell Ultrasharp monitors?

I've had a few Dell Ultrasharp monitors over the years, and noticed that the stands' interface with the monitor has been consistently the same. Is this true for all Dell Ultrasharp monitors? Do all the Ultrasharp stands' monitor interface look like this?

Onboard graphics connected monitors don't sleep while discrete video connected monitors do sleep

Resolved. Intel HD Graphics Control Panel > Audio Settings > Audio Without Video setting. This was ON. Turning it to OFF allows the monitors to enter sleep via Windows 7 Power Options display turnoff setting.

Onboard graphics connected monitors don't sleep while discrete video connected monitors do sleep

Some digging around in the Intel graphics control panel shows that under Power Management Support, standby mode and suspend mode are "Not Supported". Strange as these are Dell and Asus monitors made in the last 1-2 years.

Using 4 monitors. How can I go up to 5 or 6 monitors?

Just to follow up on this. So I've got 5 monitors running, with 2 on onboard graphics and 3 on the nvidia video card. I borrowed a DisplayLink USB adapter from a friend and was able to add a 6th monitor. Pretty cool. And a bit cheaper than the DisplayPort splitter linked above. And a lot...

Using 4 monitors. How can I go up to 5 or 6 monitors?

Turns out the Nvidia GeForce GTX 645 will drive 3 monitors, not just 2. So between the Nvidia card and onboard graphics adapter, I can drive 5 monitors. If I want to go to 6 or more, I'll have to start looking into some of the other suggestions.

Using 4 monitors. How can I go up to 5 or 6 monitors?

Running a Dell XPS 8700 with Intel integrated graphics and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 645 video card. Have 2 monitors on the onboard graphics (HDMI and DisplayPort), and 2 monitors on the video card (HDMI and DVI; DisplayPort port empty). The video card will only drive 2 monitors simultaneously, and...

Memtest not showing all the memory

Yep, this was the problem. Updated BIOS and Memtest is showing 4026M.

Memtest not showing all the memory

So the GPU comes with 1gb of video RAM. Seems like BIOS might be inadvertently capping system at 4gb of RAM and since it sees 1gb of video RAM, maybe it's making only 3gb of motherboard installed memory. Laptop has a pretty old BIOS, so an update might resolve this.

Memtest not showing all the memory

No idea, I bought it used. How can I figure that out? Even if it was using onboard graphics outside of gaming, why the huge discrepancy? The first laptop has onboard graphics and memtest is showing 7988 vs 8gb physically installed memory, so it's spot on.

Memtest not showing all the memory

The first system (8gb RAM) has only onboard graphics. Second system (4gb RAM, but memtest not showing it all) has a dedicated GPU. These are both laptops.

Memtest not showing all the memory

Here's a system with 2 x 4gb memory sticks. Memtest shows 7988M of memory, as expected. Here's a different system with 2 x 2gb memory sticks. Memtest shows 3130M of memory. o_O Memtest detects no errors (see bottom of pic):

Monitor shared between two computers - default input and timing out of non-default

You nailed it. I was using the Input setting in the Menu, which basically means hitting one of the buttons to toggle the input. But in a submenu, there's another Input setting, and while it doesn't explicitly say so, this looks to be the default input.

Monitor shared between two computers - default input and timing out of non-default

I've got a monitor that I share between a laptop and a desktop. This monitor serves as a second monitor for the laptop and a third monitor for the desktop. The monitor is connected to the desktop via DVI and to the laptop via VGA. If both computers are connected, the monitor defaults to the...

Win7 PC locks up periodically. Will more RAM help?

To followup, I ended up upgrading from 6 GB to 16 GB of RAM. It made a huge difference. No more lockups, so the guys who suggested pagefile thrashing were spot on.

Moving user folders (e.g., My Pictures) to another drive - strange folder behavior

That's exactly what I did (no start menu involved): I also moved boot_drive\users\myName\Downloads this way, and that moved fine. There is no longer a Downloads folder in boot_drive\users\myName\.

Moving user folders (e.g., My Pictures) to another drive - strange folder behavior

OK, so trying it this way, I go to boot_drive\users\myName, select My Documents and change location to data_drive\My Documents. Before moving, My Documents contains 2535 files, and this is what data_drive\My Documents shows, so that's fine. But now there is a new folder in...

Moving user folders (e.g., My Pictures) to another drive - strange folder behavior

I see . . . So when I click start, the username at the top of the right-hand column is bringing me to a list of libraries. That list is identical to boot_drive\users\myName initially after a fresh install, but once I started moving what I guess were library locations to the data drive, I...

Moving user folders (e.g., My Pictures) to another drive - strange folder behavior

After a fresh install of Win7, I'm moving some of the boot_drive\users\myName folders off the boot drive and onto a data drive. To get to the user folder/'pointers', I click Start, then my username at the top of the right column. Then I select on a folder/pointer, e.g., My Pictures, access...

Win7 on solid state drive - much slower boot when headphones plugged in

Makes sense. Crazy that it will 'mostly' work because that can set one up for disaster via data corruption. Much better if it would fail outright (i.e., not boot). In my case, outright failure would have taken mere minutes to diagnose vs hours wasted because I experienced high, but slightly...

SSD boots fine off SATA-0, but if a HDD is added to SATA-1, no boot

Oh, I never even paid attention to the color of the SATA ports on the mobo; didn't realize that SATA-0 is colored blue for easy reference. But it would be hard to screw it up, since SATA-0 is at one end of the 4 SATA ports. Rather than look at the color, I squinted and read the label on the...

Win7 on solid state drive - much slower boot when headphones plugged in

Yeah, as mentioned earlier, I'm very surprised that there was this level of functionality, rather than just a 'No boot device found' type error. There was definitely corruption. In addition to the highly variable boot times, there were various errors, such as the "Failed to connect to a windows...

SSD boots fine off SATA-0, but if a HDD is added to SATA-1, no boot

Blue what? The HDD is from the Dell factory build. Dell had it connected to SATA-0 with a blue cable. I moved that to SATA-1. I installed the SSD on SATA-0 and it happens to be connected with a red cable. Not sure if that answers your question. Agreed. Just a matter of curiosity at...

SSD boots fine off SATA-0, but if a HDD is added to SATA-1, no boot

Yes, the HDD was on SATA-0. It's now on SATA-1, and the SSD is on SATA-0. Not a dumb question. No, there is no jumper on the HDD.

SSD boots fine off SATA-0, but if a HDD is added to SATA-1, no boot

I checked the drive using Seagate's tools. No errors. I don't think there could be since I created a new partition table in GParted. That would eliminate any tiny partitions I didn't delete prior to creating the partition table, no? And then I created one large partition that filled the entire...

Win7 on solid state drive - much slower boot when headphones plugged in

Just to wrap this up, I pulled all the Windows updates, installed a bunch of apps, and the SSD is showing very consistent boot times from one power cycle to the next. Totally different behavior than what I experienced with that bad cable connection, where boot times and general responsiveness...

SSD boots fine off SATA-0, but if a HDD is added to SATA-1, no boot

Figured it out. In the BIOS, there's a Boot Priority section, and in that there's an overall boot priority listing, which lists the SSD, DVD drive, but not the HDD, which is fine. But then there are specific boot priority lists by device type. So in the hard drive device type, the SSD had 1st...
