Benefits of using a Domain for small office

When I first walked into the job, yes. They had everything on their own PC's. I've since changed it to all reside on the server that gets backed up nightly to tape. I'm not so familiar with Windows Server environments. I'm willing to learn though. And if they are willing to pay me to learn it...

Are there any extended benefits of using a domain controller in a small office (14-20 users) over setting it up as a workgroup? We currently have a windows 2K server (small business server) set up as a domain controller but all the pc's are set up in a workgroup type environment; thy do not...

The only things that will be brought from backups are his users sites. They aren't allowed to use custom scripts so it shouldn't take too long to verify those.

Yeah, he's got customers on there. I'm not sure how many but it shouldn't be more than a dozen; he uses the system mainly for backups.

Telnet on RH9 Linux

ntsysv is a simple interface for configuring runlevel services. By default, it configures the current runlevel. Or, if you wanted to configure other runlevels, those levels can be specified on the command line by listing the levels after --levels without any spaces... ntsysv --levels 016 edits...

Windows XP Pro login...

Start -> Run = control userpasswords2 -> Un-check "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer." Hit OK and it will prompt for user name / password.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm just going to do a backup then re-install using an updated scheme according to my current usage. I'd feel safer that way anyways. Thanks again!

Windows 2k vs Linux File Sever

The newer versions of Linux (Mandrake, Red Hat, and others) are getting easier and easier to install. The hardware recognition is leaps and bounds over what it used to be. Give Linux a try and if you find the learning curve still too steep for your wants/needs you can always go back to Windows.

Did you try using the Maxblast disk that came with these drives? Sometimes that works better than FDisk, sometimes not. If that doesn't work, your best bet would be to pick up an ata133 card (mine came with my 80G maxtor drive). Pop that sucker in there, let the os find it, reboot and put the...

1000-2000 grit sandpaper & clear coat?!

Grits higher than 600 can be found at your local auto parts dealer or auto body shop. I lucked out and happened to find some 1K & 2K grit at WalMart :)

Quick cabling questions about linksys router setup on cable modem

What router did you say you had? Linksys? There should be a wan port that you would connect the cable modem to. No need for crossover cable, straight through patch cable will work wonders! Heck, the modem may even come supplied with a patch cable. My DSL modem did anyways.
