Benefits of using a Domain for small office

When I first walked into the job, yes. They had everything on their own PC's. I've since changed it to all reside on the server that gets backed up nightly to tape. I'm not so familiar with Windows Server environments. I'm willing to learn though. And if they are willing to pay me to learn it...

Benefits of using a Domain for small office

Are there any extended benefits of using a domain controller in a small office (14-20 users) over setting it up as a workgroup? We currently have a windows 2K server (small business server) set up as a domain controller but all the pc's are set up in a workgroup type environment; thy do not...

The only things that will be brought from backups are his users sites. They aren't allowed to use custom scripts so it shouldn't take too long to verify those.

To be honest, it was mostly lack of a decent password on his part. Nothing more.

Yeah, he's got customers on there. I'm not sure how many but it shouldn't be more than a dozen; he uses the system mainly for backups.

    Linux box was rooted

Yeah, we heard about the OpenSSH vulnerability today. What files (this was a production server with some websites and other such things) are safe to backup? Should we only worry about the programs?

    Linux box was rooted

So someone was able to log into one of my friend's linux boxes (he's got several sitting on a T1) as root. They originaly started out by trying to log in with FTP and were unsucsesfull. Next, they got in with SSH. Logged in and set up their own user. How can we find out what else was...

    Telnet on RH9 Linux

ntsysv is a simple interface for configuring runlevel services. By default, it configures the current runlevel. Or, if you wanted to configure other runlevels, those levels can be specified on the command line by listing the levels after --levels without any spaces... ntsysv --levels 016 edits...

    Resizing partitions in Linux [RH]

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm just going to do a backup then re-install using an updated scheme according to my current usage. I'd feel safer that way anyways. Thanks again!

Windows 2k vs Linux File Sever

The newer versions of Linux (Mandrake, Red Hat, and others) are getting easier and easier to install. The hardware recognition is leaps and bounds over what it used to be. Give Linux a try and if you find the learning curve still too steep for your wants/needs you can always go back to Windows.

    Resizing partitions in Linux [RH]

Running a Redhat file server and lately I've noticed that some of my partitions are getting a little on the full side. I run a df and see that some partitions are using approx 8% and others upwards of 93%. This is bad, I know. I thought that I had done a good job when setting up my original...

Can I get rid of my Login screen when starting up WinXP?

There's also another option: start/run/control userpasswords2 UN-check the box at the top that says: Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. When you click on Apply, it will ask you who to log on as. Doing it this way you can still use the winkey&L to lock your...

Yeah, I've got that set up. What I was more looking at though, is in the | User Configuration | Admin Templates | Windows Components | Windws Explorer In there you can restrict access to drives from My Computer, remove the "Map Network Drive" and such things. Ah well, it's prolly for the...

I've been looking at some of the options that you can enable/disable using the group policy editor. My only thing is that any choices I make seem to be SYSTEM wide. Even when using an Administrator account, some of the restrictions put into place are still in effect. Basicaly, what I want to...

I've got an old Twinhead Laptop (100mhz, 504MB HD, 16MB Ram) that I would like to add Linux to. The only problem? My only possible connection to any other computer lies in the Floppy Drive, Serial Port, and Parallel Port. I don't mind trashing what's on the HD now if I need to use all the...

Silly me. I was looking for weekly updates. I'm using RH 7.2.xxx, and it DOES have the /etc/cron.daily etc directories. But these are all owned by root. It's not possible for some other user to put anything in there, is it? I know I can chown and whatnot, but I'd rather not. Could I make...

Sure you may not want to try to fix it, but if you just wipe everything how the heck are you going to know how they got in in the first place? Wherever the flaw was, it's going to be in the new install that you set up according to the doc's you made when you first installed. Wouldn't it be...

Verdict in the Michael `Mucko` MCdermott case is about to be anounced *Verdict In*

Sentence was passed by the judge, 7 consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole. Too bad MA doesn't believe in the death penalty. But that's where the no chance of parole comes in. Any first degree murder sentence invokes that little catch-22. Anyone ever been to cedar junction...

how do i install 3 160gb drives? (updated, got card)

Did you try using the Maxblast disk that came with these drives? Sometimes that works better than FDisk, sometimes not. Quick cabling questions about linksys router setup on cable modem

What router did you say you had? Linksys? There should be a wan port that you would connect the cable modem to. No need for crossover cable, straight through patch cable will work wonders! Heck, the modem may even come supplied with a patch cable. My DSL modem did anyways.
