I have a Toyota Corolla. It drives nicely and is pretty great on gas. I'm not sure how it holds up against other cars, but you can definitely find a newer one for under $10,000 and from the look of it it'd suit your needs nicely.
I've been doing Paleo since November of last year. I've lost about 30 pounds. It's pretty great if you're fine with the whole no dairy thing. You get used to it after about a week.
Unless you have some spare parts you don't care about to do some swaps, I second (third, fourth, fifth?) going to a shop and finding out the problem. I really wouldn't recommend shooting in the dark and potentially damaging new components that you bought HOPING they were the culprits.
A GPU upgrade is probably due, but if it's not your biggest concern, then upgrade the other stuff first. You'll run into money eventually (I hope so for the sake of your precious games).
As I understand it, single cores hitting the same clocks as multi-cores would be better in multiple aspects, but would be difficult (impossible?) to currently produce.
I thought it'd be some lame point-n-click feel-em-up going into it (I knew it wasn't an action game by any stretch), but I was actually pleasantly surprised. I must've played through all the chapters in a single sitting. I thought it was great.
All you really need to know about a mobo and CPU is that the sockets have to match. If it is an LGA 1155 Intel CPU (like the 2500k), you're going to need to buy an LGA 1155 mobo (ATX,mATX,m-ITX are just form factors). What you should really be concerned with is mobo CHIPSETS if you plan on...
If you want portable, the Fractal Define R4 comes in an mATX version:

You can also buy a standard ATX R4 with a window if that's what you're interested in.
If you're looking for a good cooling solution, do not get the XFX card. The Sapphire is significantly better at cooling, and like wan3r3r said above, the MSI card is also a good choice.
