Discussion Intel current and future Lakes & Rapids thread

So, we will see more Cannon Lake SKUs next year, but not Ice Lake? I believe that Intel said Cannon Lake is 10nm and Ice Lake 10nm+, but from the earnings call it did not sound like 10nm+ would have any chance of making it in 2019.

AMD AMA - Starts at 12PM EST on Wednesday May 9

Hi James, I have a question about Ryzen laptops. So far, the reception is a bit hit and miss. On the good side is that the iGPU beats any Intel iGPU by a large margin and also the CPU performance is quite good. On the bad side, the main criticism is that battery life is poor compared with...

    AMD launches Ryzen Mobile 7 2700U & 5 2500U with Vega Graphics

About LPDDR3 memory: Raven ridge does not support this, but that may not be as important as you think it is. The advantage of LPDDR3 is much lower idle power. The 2500U draws 5.9W idle, the i5-8550U draws 4.1W (according to notebookcheck). That's great, but what if you want decent graphics...

    AMD launches Ryzen Mobile 7 2700U & 5 2500U with Vega Graphics

I think HBCC is already working in Vega, but you don't see a benefit unless the workset is bigger than VRAM.

    AMD launches Ryzen Mobile 7 2700U & 5 2500U with Vega Graphics

Does anyone think Raven Ridge with 2GB of HBM + dual DDR4 controllers would be a good idea? The Vega iGPU would use HBCC to control caching between main memory and faster HBM.

AMD EPYC Server Processor Thread - EPYC 7000 series specs and performance leaked

I think the reason that Epyc is proving so popular is the amount out I/O it provides - 128 PCIe lanes. 4 years ago 40 PCIe lanes were considered adequate for a server, but times have changed. These days servers are being packed with SSDs connected via NVMe - that chews through a lot of PCIe...

Where are all the major OEM's PCs with AMD Ryzen processors?

I think this is closer to the truth. Intel has won their recent EU appeal, because EU wasn't able to prove that the loyalty rebates were harming competition.

AMD Naples preview, benchmarks, prices and discussion

From the specs, it looks like AMD will score a home run on this one. There's just one thing, will they have the actual servers ready to roll on launch, or do OEMs like Dell and HP need another few months to incorporate Naples into their product?

    Microsoft Windows 10 on ARM

I'm guessing that the applications shown in the video are "pre-cached". In other words, the application has already been run once, which allows the x86 to arm code to be translated and stored in the cache, the second time it's run the application runs much faster and that's how it looks like...

[Digitimes] Intel building 14nm chips for Spreadtrum

AMD Ryzen (Summit Ridge) Benchmarks Thread (use new thread)

I wouldn't make that assumption. There were a good few changes in 1.3 Just out of curiousity I filtered results just for RX 480 GPU and i7-6700K and I get 5 differeent results ranging from 6000 to 5,400. So, the results actually do vary widely for different versions of the game.

AMD Ryzen (Summit Ridge) Benchmarks Thread (use new thread)

Are you sure those are benched on the same version of AotS? The Zen sample was benched on version 1.30. You can select the game version from the "more filters" tab.

AMD Ryzen (Summit Ridge) Benchmarks Thread (use new thread)

I was looking at those AotS benchmarks. A 3.00GHz 8 core i7-5960X scores 5700 ( on high setting), while a 4Ghz 4 core i7-6700K scores 6000. That is telling me that clockspeed is more important than number of cores in that particular benchmark. So, the Zen engineering sample has 8 cores, but is...

    Intel's Q2: Meh

Intel's amortization this quarter is only $90 million. I thought the exit from mobile would be a lot more. The partnership with Spreadtrum and RDA cost 1.5 billion and then there's development costs of Sofia and Bronxton. Maybe they are going to declare those loses in next quarter?

[Extremetech] Samsung: Full speed ahead for 10nm, EUV deploys at the 7nm node

BTW, the reason that Samsung is using EUV for 7nm while Intel and TSMC aren't, is because Samsung's 7nm is in 2020, while TSMC's 7nm is in 2018 (too early for EUV to be ready).

65.0% increase in profits this quarter and Q2, their worst quarter, has 13% increase YoY in profits. How is that weak? A lot of companies would dream to have that type of weakness.
