For these prices would you go for the PowerColor @160 or spend a bit more and get this Sapphire for 175? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202166&cm_re=sapphire_nitro_r9-_-14-202-166-_-Product The Sapphire is quieter with better cooling.

My G3258 was a poor overclocker - not bad with 1.3 Vcore though

I got mine on Amazon for $55. If you wait a little while you may see the same price. For a while now prices have been dipping that low every so often. I realize this is more than MC but if you aren't near one or like me are just too lazy to drive 40 minutes there and back again it is a pretty...

    PleXBMC Help

For a while I moved between Plex/PlexHT and Kodi. Kodi won for me in the end. If you are an android user you can buy the premium version of Yatse (the Kodi remote) and you can stream Kodi content to your Android devices and control kodi playback on your TV, computer, etc. The great thing...

ASUS RMA nightmare - Buyer Beware

This is great. I wish this had been my experience. I have been told multiple times by ASUS that they do not (and cannot) provide new boards for RMAs when I spoke with them. I spoke with many different reps and managers throughout this process they all said the same thing. They told me very...

ASUS RMA nightmare - Buyer Beware

Yeah, I saw the original post and didn't think I would add much by responding but I will now since people are defending me. As I said earlier I'm A+ certified. I repaired PCs at Best Buy's repair center (not in store... the warehouse where they sent the PCs when the in-store techs couldn't...

Intel forces all Non Z series mainboards to disable Overclocking

I agree. If you have overclocking disabled it really shouldn't be an issue. The G3258 only runs two cores so it can run a mild overclock with the cooler which is the same as the hotter K series chips. I wonder if sometimes people have overclocking enabled and don't know it. I had to...

ASUS RMA nightmare - Buyer Beware

ASRock was a spinoff from ASUS. But they are separate companies now. And the thread isn't trying to say ASUS makes bad hardware.. only that ASUS USA RMA support has major issues. Specifically repair. You may be fine if you just need to call in and get some help that can be resolved with...

Firefox on Linux slower than on Windows?

To clean up go in to a shell and kill FireFox. Also, there are ways to disable the cache. Yes, there will be a fairly large cache on your drive somewhere and there have been reports of this causing issues.

Firefox on Linux slower than on Windows?

This. I fought with getting FF and Chrome working in Unity and Xubuntu (xfce4) with the expectation that it would be as snappy as Windows. I could never get it to that point. A big part of the issue is the graphics drivers, versions, etc and you can make some improvement by doing some...

[noob] Which popular distros support FDE?

Anything available via apt-get should work. What I have found is that some other programs had issues. I don't remember the exact details because it has been awhile but I think Plex and similar programs had some problems.

[noob] Which popular distros support FDE?

Yep, they do. What are you going to use the computer for? Reason I ask is many programs won't play nicely out of the box with an encrypted setup. You can usually work around these issues but it will involve recompiling the programs in question.

Setting up a VPN on vps or purchasing straight VPN service?

You don't necessarily have to pipe your whole internet through the VPN. You could for example have your main PC with an on/off switch for VPN and have a NAS/always on PC which only routes certain (or all) traffic through a VPN. This is pretty straightforward to accomplish using Linux and...

How do I make an executable bash script?

If you want to see if your script is doing anything you can get more debug by adding: set +x If you put this at the top of the script you will see what steps are being executed and if there are any errors.

Do I need a new video card or new OS?

Can confirm. I just sold a GA-965P-DS3 with 2GB RAM and an E6400 for $60 on ebay. A better alternative might be to go with an H97 board, G3258, and a single 4gb stick. This would meet your needs as it has on-board video and would only cost you around $150. It would also be upgradeable in...

Do I need a new video card or new OS?

You have a couple free options you can try. 1. Download Media Center Classic. This should have all of the codecs needed to run videos well. 2. Download and configure Kodi (XBMC). This also has everything needed to watch videos. If neither of these work you may need to upgrade.

What was your most significant CPU upgrade?

Another Tandy... nice. I remember when we upgraded our old Tandy 8086's RAM so that we could run King's Quest III. It ran so slow but we had no idea because that was how everything ran. I always set the speed to max in the game even though it didn't make much of a difference. Then I got my...

Intel forces all Non Z series mainboards to disable Overclocking

I'm running my G3258 with the stock HSF at 4.2 as well. It will go much higher on this board (tested up to 4.5 ghz) but gets too hot with the stock HSF. I was pleasantly surprised how well this overclocked. It's an HTPC so I don't have any need to push it and I didn't want to purchase an...

ASUS RMA nightmare - Buyer Beware

It definitely is. I bought a Microcenter bundle and had settled on an ASUS Z97-AR or ASRock Extreme4. The ASUS at the time was more expensive. Went with the ASUS because it seemed they had a better track record of new boards working (based on newegg and other reviews). Also, IIRC they had a...

ASUS RMA nightmare - Buyer Beware

I didn't realize you could RMA through Amazon for the entire product warranty period. This is a huge selling point for Amazon. I bought it through my local MicroCenter so maybe I should have tried going through them first. Hmm, maybe I still could? Edit: nope, 15 day returns. Yep, my last...

ASUS RMA nightmare - Buyer Beware

I realize that I have posted in a few threads about this but I haven't provided the details of my experience. Which z97 board - or are they all the same ?

Don't buy an ASUS board. They might make good products but the nightmare that is their RMA department kills the deal. My experience has been that on today's motherboards components are more likely to fail than with motherboards of yesteryear so buying from a vendor that is known for having a...

Intel forces all Non Z series mainboards to disable Overclocking

Doesn't matter. I recently upgraded my H97 PRO4 to 2.0, realized that overclocking was disabled, and then downgraded to 1.9 with no issues. Overclocking is working again. I'm very happy with my H97 Pro4. Paired with a G3258 it is a perfect HTPC which does not require a discrete graphics card.

Need help getting a Graphics card

You could always buy a used PSU. You can find something like the Corsair HX 620 on Ebay for around $30. I agree that you wouldn't want to keep your current PSU. When they go the have a tendency to take other components with them.

    Are you buying Haswell?

I won't be buying one. I am currently running an e6400 and playing games at 1920x1200. Bought an SSD a year ago so games would load faster and have been fine up until some of this year's games (Neverwinter MMO is an example). Based on the reviews I've seen unless you really need the newer...
