Worth going from a 770 4GB to a 970?

I would say yes, if you need the extra performance and your son may get into more high powered games as he gets older. Here in the UK you can pick up 970's from about £260 quid, maybe cheaper in the US though. The EVGA SC version is £288 over here.

Why would/did you buy an AMD CPU?

I'm using a Phenom X4-965be at 3.8ghz only because I had an AM3 board with a X3-435 on it. Couldn't afford a new mobo at the time and the socket won't take an FX. Next Xmas though, I'm looking to get Mobo/CPU and SSD so I'm curious how the land will lie at that time. Would still like to go AMD...

Video Card installation issue.

Can I suggest you reset your motherboard BIOS before you do anything? Pull the battery out or short the pins for 30 seconds. I had issues when changing my video card and PSU at the same time which were only resolved by doing this.

Help needed for buying Graphics card

16000 inr is about 155 quid, so for that the choice is either a 660 or a 270x. Both are great cards, ( my son has a 660gtx) but I would lean towards the 270x as it's a bit faster. Not a lot in it though.

Personally, I would remove the fan and give it a damn good clean, then wipe the old paste off the chip and stick some new paste on. Put it back together and test it. Total cost of ah heck all, if you have some paste lying around of course! ( I use the stuff that came with my 212+ cooler)...

Is the 7770 a decent card?

I used a 5770 right up til crimbo playing BF3 at 1080p with most settings on high, some on medium and it was fine, that's with a Phenom 965, and a 7770 is slightly quicker. At 1600x900 it will have no trouble. I couldn't realistically play BF4 on high to Ultra though so I replaced it with am...

Hi Dawp, old card is an ASUS voltage tweak 5770 which served me very well. Building a new PC for my elder brother out of old bits and pieces I've acquired so have stuck it in that. (Q6600 @3ghz, win7 (32bit), 4gb ddr2). I'm trying to get him to try some more modern games than bf1942 and Oblivion.
