  1. R9 290X and R9 290 Owners Noise Discussion (Most Important Question)

The guys at AMD should think twice about their stock cooler, or hire sb who does! I'm not saying they need to hire a team of top industrial designers tweaking every single nozzle flexion for a futuristic looking design, as nVidia does, but rather think about their long-term business strategy...
  2. AMD on track for launch of Kaveri in February 2014

So, you assume that Intel's 22nm production prices drop because they upgraded fabs to 14nm production?
  3. The AMD Mantle Thread

Apart from the nv logo, I can't see any difference between a game using PhysX and a game using havoc or physics libraries integrated in the game engine.

  5. R260/270/280/290/290x Review thread

Depends, and we need to find out at some point. There's those who buy one high-end card every 5 or so years in the hope the next one lasts an eternity, and there's others buying a handful high-end cards per year.
  6. [PCPER] NVidia G-sync

As mad as it may sound, we're basically looking for a financially-starved, desperate-out-of-former-benevolence and soon-to-nearly-die company of sweet-natured engineers AND execs just to introduce a unified ISO standard, where another company of let's say equally-talented engineers is about to...
  7. R260/270/280/290/290x Review thread

Take it easy, AMD isn't made up of marketing whizzes as the other remaining companies in that business. Doesn't prevent them from engineering great products though. Granted, their live-stream was entertaining as a documentary on limestone propagation where the only emotion arisen was anger for...
  8. "Too Little, Too Late....Too Expensive" Did you agree?

Transistors is the least thing to worry about when talking prices. The issue with 20nm is far-higher-than-before fab upgrade and node development costs, wafer costs and lithography costs. And then, transistors are projected to be merely around 35% faster, unless upgraded to FinFet, which is even...
  9. "Too Little, Too Late....Too Expensive" Did you agree?

This slogan as it stands leads to monopolistic (and in my view plain stupid) consumer behavior. No matter how a product is called and which company produces it, as consumers we should in all market situations embrace the variety of products, their respective features, flavors and ultimately...

Sounds interesting. Where do you get that info from?

  12. R260/270/280/290/290x Review thread

Welcome to rebrand land! GPU-designers, OEMs and customers worldwide are happy about it. (I'm not, btw.) I wouldn't call Hawaii a farce but the R-rest a pity.
  13. videocardzAMD Radeon R9 290X confirmed to feature 64 ROPs

Why bother about resale value at all when you're just happy with your graphics card (which ever company produced it)?
  14. videocardzAMD Radeon R9 290X confirmed to feature 64 ROPs

Tahiti was AMD's first gpu on 28nm and they went with very conservative densities. As HurleyBird says, Pitcairn puts quite some more on the table. I've heard about the same rumor, but can't assign as to who said so. I have yet to find documents attesting that 28nm hpm has higher sram...
  15. videocardzAMD Radeon R9 290X confirmed to feature 64 ROPs

let's see GK110-400-A1: 7,08bn transistors on 561 sqmm die area ~ 12,6m trans/sqmm Tahiti: 4,31bn transistors on 365 sqmm die area ~ 11,8m trans/sqmm Hawaii: ~6bn transistors (?) on 424 sqmm die area ~ 14,15m trans/sqmm So yes, if rumors are true, Hawaii is a massive jump in transistor density...
  16. Why has Nvidia not replied or given any statement about Mantle?

nVidia's response is more marketing: Titan ULTRA to make sure they maintain their first place single-gpu, some negative publicity @Origin to make sure AMD looks dumb, and ideally some rumors about how Maxwell will be the next holy grail of gpu-technology.
  17. Radeon R9 290X Priced at $730 at Newegg

I'm in the same boat, but judging from the success of Titan and the mostly relabeled GTX7xx series, we're the minority it seems.
  18. Radeon R9 290X Priced at $730 at Newegg

If it's working, then it's the first time in five... nay 10... nay 20 years, ... nay total AMD history that any of their marketing move seems to show at least to a slight degree a somewhat close tendency of the beneficial effect it was conceived to result in the first place. If that is so, then...

  21. [fudzilla] Nvidia spends 5 million on Ubisoft deal

So what's the better deal now - $5-8 million for exclusive BF4 and mantle in Frostbyte 3 or $5 million on Assassins Creed 5 and Watch Dogs? Either seems far better than $20 million pay-off for Hector Ruiz to leave the company (the alternative, a kick in the butt: *free*) ;).
  22. [techpowerup] AMD R9 290X vs nvidia Titan benchmarks

Rage was the first game ever that made me delete the intro video with bethesda logo from the base folder to actually get the game running. Either way, I didn't want to watch that logo anyway and I finally got that thing running On my Win7/64 I didn't even bother reinstalling the outdated...
  23. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

Tahiti as Radeon HD 7970 has a memory bandwidth of 264 GB/s. As for Hawaii, you're still not getting the point that a quad channel interface is a design decision taken to be significantly more power-efficient, do you? At the same time, you're badmouthing a GPU not even presented in full...
  24. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

If it's an improved GCN transistor re-layout at its core it can still be a new architecture. It has a new, supposedly more efficient memory controller. And more render engines. Does that define "new architecture" in your terms, if you have any definition of it at all?
  25. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

Nvidia is ahead, with its flagship GPUs, and their respective die size. Die size however is less of a critical lead than being a few nodes ahead in fab process. So it seems, AMD is going to compensate with higher area-efficiency.
  26. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

Depending on how many game developers jump onboard.
  27. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

So either this is Orwellian new-speak, or it's some sort of Orwellian new-speak. I have a hard time believing this.
  28. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

Ah, OK. Grasping the mode of operation of a modern & tech-driven duopoly in currency-inflated markets.
  29. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

So (pulling numbers out of my Ares) let's say, if that new AMD card is 5% faster in most scenarios than the GTX 780, draws about equal wattage, comes with BF4 and a bunch of other games, is 50% faster in 1-2 optimized games and selling for the same price, you'd still call it overpriced?
  30. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

On a subjective position, when it comes to quantitative assessment, it's "One, two, many", simple as that. I'm ever-so-slightly hinting at double-standards when it comes to consumer's behavior, get my point? You want AMD to stay your cheap jack while at the same time happily buying overpriced...
  31. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

For some on here, it's 20, nay 200, nay 20.000 times faster!
  32. OCUK: 290X "Slightly faster than GTX 780"

Buhuhuu :'(:oD: Is that how guys with SLI-Titans argue when it comes to the other camp? (not implying you actually own 1-2 Titans) In the next post, those green MBA-wannabees bash AMD for how non-profitable, not to say charitable, their GPU division works. So it's OK when nV charges 1000+ bucks...

  39. The Intel Atom Thread

Is it Intel's bribery..., I mean, marketing budget?
  40. AMD Radeon HD 9970 Specifications Leaked – Twice as fast as GTX 780 (ChipLoco rumor)

Eric Demers. Actually expectations that Hawai is somewhat on par with a GTX780 or slightly above are anything but far fetched. For a company as ATI/AMD, a 400+ mm² die is no magic either. Keep in mind that current GCN tech would be totally sufficient to match GTX780 levels on a 440-450mm² die...
