How do you think Intel will segment its Coffee Lake desktop line-up?

What will Intel offer at $250 that's better than the R5 1600x and what does that part look like? A locked 4C/8T i5 clocked at around 3.8 GHz?

Official AMD Ryzen Benchmarks, Reviews, Prices, and Discussion

That's a great visualization. It would be nice to also see the 1800x vs. the 7700k and the 7700k vs. the 6900k. That would lay all of the chips on the table.

I agree. It's amazing that AMD is now actually competing against Intel and has products that many people will actually prefer to what Intel is offering.

Official AMD Ryzen Benchmarks, Reviews, Prices, and Discussion

Yeah, best not to preorder. But I think Ryzen has a ton of potential. The best part is more choice for consumers - Ryzen is strong enough that you can now legit make a valid decision to trade off lower (but still adequate) gaming performance for higher multithreaded performance and have a pretty...

Your Take on Ryzen? Worth buying or stick to Intel

I'm very impressed with Ryzen. They've caught up to Intel in a lot of areas, although not all, and are offering something that is actually causing Intel to have to adjust its prices a bit. That is pretty incredible given how horribly uncompetitive AMD was in the past few years. I think AMD now...

Geforce GTX 1080 Ti now official - Faster than Titan X ($699)

30-40% better performance than the 1080 at the same launch price as the 1080 FE? That's a pretty good improvement.

LG 38" Curved 3840x1600 Ultrawide FreeSync

Monitor looks fantastic, but 52-75hz FreeSync isn't good enough on the low end. With that resolution you want it to be able to drop down to 30hz with LFRC.

    Civilization VI: Performance Analysis (Techpowerup)

I agree with everyone that it's bizarre that it's so demanding given how it looks. The performance on AMD is poor and even Nvidia isn't doing great. It will be interesting to see what happens with DX12 and/or further optimization.

[Eurogamer] Deep Dive on the PS4 PRO GPU (Polaris + Vega features!)

That's easy. There are a bunch of errors in your reasoning but the most obvious is your presumption that AMD owed you a duty to sell you a product with the same features as in the PS4 Pro - which may or may not have been ready at the time Polaris launched. The duty AMD owed you is to accurately...

[Eurogamer] Deep Dive on the PS4 PRO GPU (Polaris + Vega features!)

Great article, thanks for posting it. It's really exciting to see GPU development pushed forward through collaboration between companies like AMD and Sony. The article makes it sound like the ID buffer approach is based on Sony developed technology though. I wonder if that will make its way over...

RX 480 vs GTX 1060 (same price)

I think the 1060 is slightly faster right now but I would personally go with the RX480 because of AMD's track record with DX12/Vulkan and console optimized games. The RX480 seems likely to stand up better over the long run. But they're pretty close in all respects and both seem like...

    New monitor

I have a 34" 2560x1080 LG 34UM67 which runs at 75hz and has FreeSync and it's great. I was using a 27" 1080p before, so the resolution doesn't bother me. I think it's the perfect size for gaming, although if you have money to spare then I'd recommend a 3440x1440 resolution. I would definitely...

Video card tests at less than maximum graphics settings

This is a great idea. It would be a review site that applies its own subjective view of what graphics options are optimal from an IQ vs. performance basis and then tests using those settings. The most important part of this would be to explain why a certain setting was chosen and use screenshots...

    Next-gen API benches for RX 480 & 1060.

Now that the 480 performance has jumped in ROTR, is that still a broken DX12 implementation? I guess it depends on whether it's faster in DX11 or DX12. Also the fact that the 480 is faster than the Fury X suggest that it's still broken.

Geforce GTX 1060 Thread: faster than RX 480, 120W, $249

A good test for whether 4GB is going to be a problem in the future is to look at whether 3GB is a problem now. The 280x/7970 have 3GB and have held up well in terms of GCN architecture in newer games. I don't see that 3GB has been a major problem at 1080 or 1440 in current games so far. Even the...

    Next-gen API benches for RX 480 & 1060.

That's a fair point. If the RX 480 continues to distance itself from the 1060 in DX12 and Vulkan then the efficiency will also skew towards the 480. I guess we'll have to see how the upcoming generation of games perform.

A call to ALL Nvidia owners - It's time to check our latency

I just tried this myself and I get huge latency spikes and I'm running a R9 290x. Are you sure this is an Nvidia problem? Seems like it could be any number of things. Edit: The latency is caused by ataport.sys.

    Next-gen API benches for RX 480 & 1060.

Yeah, the RX 480 will almost certainly be faster than the 1060 in newer games - and maybe by a lot. But the 1060 is still more power efficient by a good margin.

Who's holding back PC gaming? Consoles or Nvidia?

Funny, I sort of think the opposite. The people who are willing to pay $60 for games are the ones that make it profitable for companies to make them and allows cheaper gamers like me to buy them at a discount after a few months/years. It's a cross-subsidy of sorts.

Clarification - Does TDP correspond to maximum gaming load power or not?

Yes, all else being equal, a lower wattage card is a significant benefit. My 290x can really ramp up the temperature in the room when it's going full tilt!

Now We All See the Genius of AMD Going Lowend First

Yes, AMD is playing the only hand they have at the moment. They don't have anything to offer at the high end right now. But I wouldn't call the RX 480 a power hog - it's just very unexceptional for the new lithography node. But by the standards of just last year it's a pretty efficient card.

That's me! Used to have 27" 1920x1080 and now have 34" 2560x1080 Freesync display. Although I agree it's not great for text, it's pretty great for gaming - I really love the ultrawide format. Although 3440x1440 would be better, I don't have the GPU horsepower to run it. My eyesight is also...
