I'm going to be reformatting. . .

getting back to important hardware drivers... make sure you have the drivers for your network card (or modem). without them, you can't go online to get drivers for the rest of your hardware (unless your OS natively supports your network card or modem)

SCSI benchmarks

I have the same card with a seagate x15-36lp (second generation 15k rpm, 8meg cache). hdtach shows the transfer rate as ~56MB/s at the beginning of the drive and ~42MB/s at the end. you can decide if you need a faster scsi adapter...

Computer won't turn on since power outage in NY.

does your power supply have a voltage switch in the back (i.e one way is 115V, the other is 230V)? if so, with the computer off switch it to 230V then back to 115V. sometimes this "resets" the power supply if it locks up.

i don't have a problem with ecc memory... actually, i've never used it. generally, only servers need registered memory (and some motherboards if you fill all slots) so i don't buy it if i don't need it. if it works for you, i won't talk you out of it.

yes, each slot can handle up to a 512meg stick... you can upgrade by replacing either one or both 256meg sticks with a 512meg stick. it will run fine with a 256meg stick and a 512meg stick. also, why are you using ecc memory?

in that basic configuration i don't think you will be able to play quality divx files smoothly. it is light on memory (especially for windows 2000) and way underpowered in the cpu department. i can't verify its quality since i don't have one, but this might be the solution to the divx question...

since you mentioned games, the cpu will handle any game fine but your video card would be your bottleneck. i'm not suggesting you replace the video card (unless you want to), but just pointing out that a 1.2ghz duron will not make any game unplayable. as far as what it can't do... it can't...

as mentioned, logging of can be used to keep others from using your computer... but then again, you can just lock the workstation without actually logging off. in winXP, you can switch users and have applications open on users that are "logged off" other than that, the reason i log off then...

you can use the NET USE command as mentioned, or you can map the shared folder and have the computer you called user1 logon at startup (that way the connection is established). this way the person on user1 shouldn't have to put in a password when accessing the file. as for backing up a file...
