I heard from somebody familiar with the industry that for a while that RAM prices starts dropping around march and bottom out around september. peak prices occurs in january. the guy apparently has been observing this trend for at least 14 years. go figure.

The rule of thumb with taxes (federal, state - california, FICA, etc) due from marginal income, assuming AGI of at least 75000, is about half of it. It gets worse if your AGI is at least 250000. Still not bad.

Compact Florescent bulbs: $2.24 @ Home Depot (So Cal Only?)

I bought a pair of 2-pack REIT flourescent bulb from Costco today for 3.29 each 2-pack. That means each bulb is only 1.65 or so. These are 1100 lumens (equivalent to 60-75 watts incandescent bulb), 15-watt, spiral bulbs and easily replace those incandescent ones because of their short size.
