Yep, turning off ignition when driving is bad idea. Besides loosing power steering and brake booster, you also may lock the steering wheel. It isn't good for automatic gearbox, either. My friend tried it once when driving about 60mph, he almost crashed he's car when steering lock went on :)

Answer to the origina question: with fuel injection, fuel is usually cut off when braking with engine (manual transmission). If you take your foot off the gas on gear and engine revs are higher than idle, ECU turns off the fuel until revs are lowering to idle level. As simple as that. Don't know...

AMD 64 versus P4 32 bit processor

AFAIK there's quite many linux distros compiled for A64 avalible. Only people who think OS=Windows are without 64 bits :)

Via C3 gigapro 1.3GHz do DivX?

1Ghz VIA C3 can't play divx movies? WTF? I have 450Mhz K6-2+ and so far it has been just fine for all the movies I have seen (running linux and using mplayer for movie player).

You never know how fast your computer really is until you do a clean install.

Wierd, I don't know any car that would loose brakes when engine is shut off, you just lose power assist and have to press pedal harder. Also, most of the more expensive cars (at least german-made) maintain brake power assist for about 10 brakings after engine doesn't run. And there definately...

Building a PII 350 machine - best video card for it?

I'd recommend GF2 family, too. GF3 and newer ones tend to requie more CPU power, so they actually may run slower on low-end machine (link to old Ace's GF3 review).

PSA: Do not buy a '90-'94 VW Passat

Their auto tannys aren't very good but Passats from those years are pretty reliable and nice cars IMHO. I guess cost of parts depends where you live, in here they are one of the cheapest and you can fix your VW almost in any service :)

Guitar amp/laptop question

Yep, amp's line out isn't any different from, say, CD-player's line out. And the sound out of there isn't quite as good as the one coming from amp speaker(s). I tried to record with my amp (Roland) when I got it plugging it's line out into my computer soundcard's line in. The result can be heard...

5-cyl isn't anything exotic, besides Volvo VAG (VW-Audi) has used them for a quite a long time for now. 5 supposed to be optimal number for engines with displacement between 2-2.5L to keep cylinders thermodynamically in optimal size (aruond 450cc as I remember). Also, it shouldn't be very...

YACT: Ok experts. 4WD/AWD vs FWD in bad road conditions on paved roads.

In bad road conditions, good AWD simply owns :) Part-time 4WD (without center differential) is good only for off-roading or very bad/slippery conditions, driving your truck with 4WD Hi engaged on pavemen makes turning harder and over the time destroys tires and transmission. Proper full-time 4WD...
