Need a cheap soundcard

The card based on the VIA envy are quite a good choice. Cards such as the Philips Dynamic Edge PSC604 or Sonic Edge PSC605 should also satisfy your needs. Both are great little budget cards

Does anyone own or know anything about this MSI-8879-G4Ti4200-T64?

Monitor doesn't power up. Is it dead?

This happened to one of my 17" monitors recently, there was no power up. I got is repaired - apparently the problem was the power transformer and a burned resistor. It was fixed for $65 AUD. Cheers

Soundcard under $45..

You've got plenty of choices apart from Creative. The cards with the VIA Envy chip are quite good for the money, and can be bought fairly cheaply, such as the Mad Dog 7.1 Entertainer, Chaintech AV-710 etc. You can also consider the Philips Sonic Edge 5.1 PSC605 and the Hercules Fortissimo III...

Getting SICK of Epson inkjets. Need advice big time.

Can't say that I've experienced this on my cheap C40SX, it does produce some pretty hairy looking text with bi-directional on, and sucks through the ink too. If I had the choice now, I'd definately go for a Canon. Cheers

Which sound card has the lowest load on system?

Probably the SB Live, but if it's going in a computer over 900MHz, the real world difference will be minimal. The C-media 8738 sounds particularly good when the modified CMI 9738/9739 drivers are installed see here for details, but make sure you use the new 9738 drivers from the C-media...

so what's plugged into your parallel and/or serial port?

In the parallel there's my Canon CanoScan FB310 and Epson Stylus C40SX connected in daisy chain. Serial port has a Casio Cassiopeia A-11A Win CE 2.0 HPC connected, sometimes a Casio CFX-9850GB+ graphics caluclator connected, other port disabled. Cheers

an35n ultra (realtek ALC650 audio)

There is a control panel for the ALC650... it's in the drivers, which you can download from the Realtek website. The control panel offers basic control over SPDIF, speakers and equalizer. It is listed in the control panel as "Sound Effect Manager" Cheers

Considering m/b for 2400+, KT600 or nForce2-400?

At $190 AU, the Abit mainboard is way out of my budget. At a max I want to spend $110-$130, thats why I'm considering the Gigabyte GA-7N400E, Gigabyte GA-7N400L, ASUS A7N8X-X, Soltek SL-75FRN2-L. I will only be using PC2100 memory with the 2400+.

Thanks. Now it comes down to the Asus A7N8X-X or the Giga-Byte GA-7N400E (or for the same price the dual channel 7N400-L1). Can't find any reviews on the GA-7N400E, but noticed that it has a 3 phase power supply. Opinions? Cheers!

Need some opinion on the best single channel m/b for the 2400+. Considering the Asus A7N8X-X, Asus A7V600-KT600, Giga-Byte 7VT600-KT600, the Giga-Byte GA-7N400E (NForce) and a few other similarly priced boards. I want something with a little overclocking potential... if possible with a PCI lock...

I used the VIA EPIA mainboard with the VIA CLE266 North Bridge with 512MB DDR 266. It wasn't lightning fast with XP, but passable. Cheers

It's ok for its intended usage. It won't win any speed contests, but then again, it was never designed to. I personally wouldn't go below the 1GHz version though.

Best 17" CRT On the planet?

I have a LG Flatron F700B which I like. Nice 0.24 stripe pitch. Both the LG Flatron F700P and Philips 107P are pretty good. The Samsungs 765MB seems like a good choice too. Cheers

Acoustic Edge + WinXP = Bad?

QSounds QMSS will only expand sources for analog speakers. It will not work on digital (SPDIF) speaker systems. You will only get 2 channel sound with these speakers, 5.1 channels will be used for DVD's and other files encoded with AC3 or DTS etc... Cheers

Almost all soundcards will not output 5.1 channel digital sound, unless the file is specifically encoded (like DVD's) - nForce is the only one I know of that has a built in encoder (although C-Media is planning a similar solution). If you want to get multi-channel sound from all sources easily...

The latest Kyro II drivers support released eariler this year support PowerVR's EnTnL, (Enhanced T&L). Make sure the check box is selected under Direct 3D options. EnTnL works in a similar way to the way 3D Analyze does. Cheers

New Nvidia Detonator Drivers Released Today! BAD?

DO SOUND CARDS MATTER?

It really depends what you mainly use your soundcard for. If it's only for general purposes, then almost any soundcard will do.... even AC97. However, if you want more FEATURES, such as EAX Advanced HD, QSounds QMSS (QSound Multi-Speaker System), extra I/O's, etc... then it may be worthwhile to...

Question on RAM: 512MB vs 2x256MB

When I bought another stick of 256MB PC2100 for my Shuttle AK31 3.1, I had to raise some of the latency settings, namely the Command Rate CMD, which did reduce performance somewhat. Also had to lower the FSB slightly from 150 to 147MHz for the system to remain stable. Cheers
