It depends how you use it. The mini is just incredible in size/weight. But on balance I'd go for the larger screen for films, photos, web readability, etc.

As a wired option I like the little MS notebook mice. They're light and have short cables. Depends how far away your USB socket is though. I actually use an Apple keyboard so it plugs into the side of that, hence the need for a short cable.

I'm running an X220 which has been fantastic over the last two years.
Currently considering a T440s for the larger display, but it's still not available, despite having been announced in July!
ThinkPad users would usually use nothing else.
S
Apparently. There's been what feels like a long wait for the T440s, which seems to hit a sweet spot with 14" FHD yet weighing around 1.5kg IIRC, as it was announced back in July.
Any time now apparently. Should be available for CTO too.
S
I wouldn't go beyond 23/24" for 1080. I've used 23" at 1080 and 24" at 1200 and both work well.
I think 27" would be too much for this resolution - too much panning probably required.
I use a 27" at 2560x1440 and that works really well.
S
^I'm waiting for the ThinkPad T440s to start shipping - might be worth you considering. Very light for a 14" and looks like it's going to be a decent machine. Supposed to be available this month.
S
It sounds like you're using sleep / hibernate rather than an actual shut down.
Is that the case?
Try doing it from the start menu rather than using any power button etc.
S
^yes I thought they should work together well. Setup was difficult though, and the iPad seemed to really dislike 'seeing' both the original AP and the repeater at the same time. Other aspects (such as the wired port) wouldn't work either.
I'll try and put some more time in to getting them...
I'm waiting for the ThinkPad T440s which is due this month I think. It has a hot-swappable battery to extend run time. Well, I'm waiting for a full notebookcheck review first.
S
^Sorry I got mixed up. My router is actually the Billion 7800N.
(The repeaters I was trying to work with were the 3100N)
Hope that's more useful.
Cheers,
S
It's just that the signal fades out at a certain distance, hence trying to use a wireless repeater to extend that coverage. There are a few walls along the way, and no opportunity to extend using a cable to a second access point in my situation.
Original router is a billion bipac 3100n.
S
Absolutely. This is my favourite lens with my 50D. Taught me so much about photography, and in particular the relationship between aperture and focal length.
The cheapo Canon 50mm is also great, and is under £100/$100 IIRC. I had this first, and had so much fun with it I upgraded to the...
I'd also love to know.
I've tried Billion extenders/repeaters lately. Difficult to set up, and when running any Apple iOS devices seem to really struggle if they can see both the original router and the repeater at the same time. When I say struggle, I mean no data. Move away from the...
^I'd expect it to be superfluous, and might even complicate the setup and running of the machine. All the standard configs with SSD seem to leave this slot empty, or use it for WWAN. There are no 'dual SSD' configs sold AFAICT.
S
I have an x220 - my first Thinkpad. It's streets ahead of previous laptops, Sony Z and Dell Precision. Next machine will be a Thinkpad.
^superb advice.
S
The Samsung 840 series seems to be the most highly-rated line of general purpose drives in the Anandtech tests/reviews of late.
My next machine will have one, but no personal experience of them yet.
S
The only time mice have died on me is when they've been repeatedly stuffed into bags, and they've given up where the cable meets the mouse, or where the cable meets the USB plug. Never had a mouse itself fail on me.
S
It probably varies even within each manufacturer's range. Assume you're after laser. Probably best to look for a recent, detailed group test including running costs all worked out for you.
S
Yup, generally true.
Although Dell tend to include standard carts with their new laser printers, which makes a massive difference. I've had a few of their printers now and all have shipped with standard carts.
S
I think mass production is the key. Retina MacBooks are mass produced, and apple has their weight behind them as a product.
I'm not sure anybody else is really in a position to do something like that with a key component in the supply chain such as a display panel.
S
Indeed.
Watch the Chris Harris video on the all-electric Merc SLS. It's all about torque vectoring.
Although it's a different system to the 918 admittedly.
