You are wrong. It's totally fine to upgrade firmware in a live environment. Those upgrade procedures work like a transactional commit, so the new firmware won't be activated before the next power cycle - that's why you have to reboot or perform a manual power cycle!
I can't guarantee, you have to trust my word - I registered the domain tommti-systems.de to my real name, just send the exe to some virus scanners to get some proof and there is no need to execute it as admin!
You can try my tool, unrar it and put the ssdfill.exe in a folder on your SSD, execute it. It will write a large file called fill.dat until it runs out of space, then it shows the MB/s and deletes the file. This triggers a large TRIM and garbage collect operation and should restore max. SSD...
Edrive functionality is hardware encryption support for Microsoft's bitlocker. Once it's activated, secure erase won't work anymore and it can't be disabled via normal tools.
I could reactivated my second (brand new) 850 pro via the Samsung PSID revert tool - edrive functionality could be disabled and I did a secure erase after that and restored my backup image. First SSD is still broken and will probably be RMAed.
Though the old SSD had a problem and Samsung removed the firmware after I already had flashed it. I'll RMA them both and probably move away from Samsung - they have nice products, but their QA is very lousy!
Just killed my second 850 pro 1TB.
Flashed a fresh SSD, did a secure erase, applied hw encryption and tried to restore a saved image - bang, SSD is in read only mode and secure erase is no longer supported :(
I broke my 850 Pro 1TB as well. I updated the firmware while having hardware encryption with bitlocker enabled. Now it is in read only mode, bitlocker password prompt is not appearing anymore and secure erase via the Samsung boot image is no longer supported. Hdparm and diskpart fail as well...
