I'm enjoying Battlefield 4 too much to even think of this terrible, terrible game. I think many people who know what makes a good multiplayer FPS would agree with me on that one.
Metal Gear Solid is one of the best games of all time, in my humble opinion. Since you mentioned it, I would give it a go, and keep in mind that a new one is coming out for the PS4 & Xbox One soon.

The iPad Mini with Retina is a good upgrade from the iPad 2/3, but it's not absolutely necessary if you have the first generation Mini. If it's in your budget, than go ahead and buy it. But don't be one of those people who buy the newest Apple and still have to pay an outstanding iPhone bill.
