Hearthstone

I'm not that high yet, still around rank 16, but I find that I get matched with consistently more challenging opponents in ranked. It makes for a more enjoyable match. Occasionally you run into a cheesy deck, but then you make sure you have a counter for it, or just take the loss and move on...

You need to take hearthstone for what it is. It's not MTG, it will almost certainly never be as deep as MTG. What you give up in that depth and strategy, you get back in ease of entry, and ease of play. I could teach someone the basics of hearthstone in a much shorter time. The games also...

Physical or Digital Games?

It's too bad all the digital companies take our $60 and only give us the right to use the game on their terms. Once they get it right and let us sell or give away our digital games, seems like HDD space and bandwidth would be the only reasons to keep physical discs around.

Do you game with headphones or speakers?

Definitely don't need to spend that much for a good pair. I've been using a pair of Grado SR80's for over 10 years now, still going strong and deliver great sound, all for around $100. I've also heard good things about the audio technica m50's too, for a little less than $150. The Grado's are...

Is the tide of rage against IAPs and microtransactions hitting critical mass?

This is the biggest problem, and it comes straight from all those crappy mobile games that aren't designed to be good, just addicting and profitable. I hope that the mobile world doesn't make that sort of game acceptable to the masses and have it spill over more and more into the pc/console area.

This was my problem too. Played in early-mid 2000's, but couldn't commit the time necessary for the real fun. Didn't mind doing the occasional solo, but it's so much better with other people.

Agreed, too many wires make it really annoying to move the desktop. Might be able to get away with stringing a long hdmi on the floor temporarily with a wireless controller, but that's not ideal either.

Makes me miss being able to make combinations and use any cards together in a deck. Although, I imagine it makes it easier to balance to have the class specific cards, rather than just colors in MTG.

There is a little gem in the center below the picture, color determines rarity, and they match the WOW colors or gear. Would have been easier using words like MTG, but it's not too bad. No Gem - Basic White - Common Blue - Rare Purple - Epic Orange - Legendary...

Good advice here. I'm really liking hearthstone, but it's good to get some more time under your belt before you try to build out a deck like that. That way you'll have a better idea of what you want. Coming from MTG is a good start, though, I'm sure you already have a "style" of deck you like...

True. Just ran across a legendary against another player in casual, we were both low level, so he must have gotten really lucky, or bought it. Fortunately it was his last turn before death, so he didn't get chance to use it.

I played a number of years ago for a couple months, and every time I read about these massive campaigns, maneuvering, intrigue, makes me want to play again. The commitment level seems a little too high for me though. Although I guess you get out of it what you put in, so there's that.

This is why I'm not too concerned about the PTW nature of this game. Might make it easier/quicker for people to be good, but cards are no substitute for actual skill in deck building and strategy.

what's the oldest MMORPG that's still online?

Medievia MUD always comes to mind, even though it isn't graphical. Still going, with some folks with over 40,000 hours played, crazy.

Windows 8 got better in 8.1, and they learned a lot of lessons so far. I'm sure 9 will be considered as the best windows yet, just like 7 was.

Build or Buy an HTPC?

I'd find a pre-built solution or used Tivo, simply because of this. Setting up an HTPC for TV can get pretty complicated, and you don't want to be on permanent support.

The new plasmas are much better at all those things. Having said that, there are plenty of LCD, LED Tv's that have great picture quality nowadays.

build or buy NAS for plex server

This the way to build the most powerful machine. If you can run HDMI through the walls, or if the server is nearby, you can run NAS and HTPC on the same box. Either using XBMC paired with an IR repeater, or a tablet running a xbmc remote app. But for most uses what OP went with will work great.

Is Starcraft II one of the most demanding "modern" skill based game?

Agreed, I do the same thing. With Dota and Lol, team mechanics play a larger role than individual skill. A pro player with an noob team would have a hard time against even an average organized team.

My son just rage lost in SC2...

Get him one of those throwaway dells that's got keycaps less than a 1/4 inch tall! At least for a little while... That's what I'm suffering with while my quickfire is being RMA'ed.
