Can a COM port be used as a voltmeter?

I'm pretty sure its specified in the standard that the threshold is ~3V - you're right it's probably +/- 0.5 V or so, but the threshold should be around 3...

Can a COM port be used as a voltmeter?

Is it possible to use a regular serial port on a computer to read or transmit specific voltages? It's easy enough to set it to "on" or "off" (+/- 12 V), but I'm wondering if there's a way to directly read the voltage on the pins...?

How can I make DHCP work with a bridge and ethernet over 1394?

I considered doing that, but the LAN administrators don't want me doing it... I might do it anyway, but I'd rather try to get the bridge working first...

How is this useful? I already know how to make a Firewire network... it works fine - the problem is getting the laptop to talk to the LAN's DHCP server...

Ok, I have these connections: XP Pro Box connected via 10M Ethernet to larger LAN XP Pro Laptop connected via Firewire using the built-in XP Ethernet over 1394 drivers I bridged the 10B-T LAN to firewire on the desktop using the XP network bridge tool, and the desktop still connects perfectly...

That seems pretty odd - I've used Norton for years and had no problems... do you have restarts at other times?

Sudden errors in Win XP

Is the registry bloated? Can unused .DLL files be cleaned up? Are there unused services that can be stopped? These may be a problem - I'm guessing there's decent software to automate this - any recommendations? Although, most of these are problems that gradually get worse - I'm talking about...

That's the entire point - It isn't near the building where my computer is. I can't run a cable to the house, but I can run a cable to a point outdoors that has a clear line-of-site to the house, so I want an outdoor enclosure for the modem and 802.11 router/access point.

hmm... that helps quite a bit - thanks skywanderer. There's still the larger problem though - how can I keep a modem and wireless router above freezing in a Minnesota winter? Is it even necessary? Will the components work even if it's -30 C?

You're right that the DVDs would be more expensive - even if the laser allows for a narrower wavelength, the DVD manufacturing process would have to make pits and valleys that are much smaller - while blue lasers may make DVD drives cheaper than red lasers, the DVDs themselves wouldn't really be...

First thing: Time is NOT "the 4th dimension" - Time is not another dimension of space - it's actually a PART of space - think back to any math or physics classes you may have had. When you want to trace the path of a particle in three dimensions, you don't make a 4-dimensional coordinate system...

It works now! The solution was to stick in the video card after re-setting the CMOS... DO NOT TRUST THE VOICE POST REPORTER! It should have told me what was wrong, considering that the POST happened, but nothing came out of my speakers... on top of that, due to poor design, the normal POST...

Yes- it should at least POST and say "processor not found" or "processor bad" or something... the problem is on the mobo - I tried another processor on the computer, and it didn't work better, so I know it's not the processor. I removed everything but the processor, and it still won't POST at...

Thermal pads or something else for AMDs?

The AMD web site says you should always use "PCM"s (thermal pads) on Athlons instead of thermal paste or grease... is this actually true, or are they just trying to keep things standardized or something?

Bizzare HDD failiures have me stumped
