XBOX Drive Died - Can a hardmod save it?

No, it isn't under warranty. It's ancient. It is a version 1.0 with the old Phillips reader in it, if this makes any difference. I replaced the power supply on it once, so I am familiar with the insides.

Thanks! That's exactly what I did. After I started this topic, I found a Microsoft Technet article explaining how to do this. Basically, you just reinstall Win 2000 over the top of what you have. When it detects a previous installation of W2K, you just select R to repair it and it reloads...

FYI-- I bought a retail 1.7 last week when the retail was only $8 more than OEM and I got an 0302 just like everyone else has been getting. With the default voltage and stock fan it easily runs over 2 GHz. So it looks like the retail CPUS are probably the same stepping as the OEM.

I have heard they are building a new Fry's next to Home Depot close to 635 & McArthur. That's just a few miles from my house and lots better than going to Garland or South Arlington. Hopefully they will get it open before Christmas.

I agree about the Duron deal being better for a new system... it has a lot more upgrade potential. The Celeron is better, however, if you are upgrading because the ECS mobo is notoriously picky about power supplies, so you often have to budget a new power supply, which ruins the upgrade...
