NO BIOS

Does the power supply fan come on? Do any lights flash on the keyboard? CD-ROM? either somthing isn't connected, or somthig is fried (bios, mobo, or CPU I'd guess. it should still post with bad ram) Did you check the switch on the back of the PSU and make sure the voltage setting is correct?

WIN98 defults to 32k clusters on 2 gig drive. Why?

This is driving me nuts. I'm working on a Dell Optplex Gxa with a 2 gig HD. By default, win98 SE formats the drive to 32k clusters rather than 16k. We're getting horrid fragmentaion and slack probs, with two hour defrag times. I know I can use the format /z option to fix this, but why the...

Can't right click on Win98SE desktop

I'm having this problem on one of the public puters in the lab where I work. Since it's an adaptive technology lab for the disabled, we try to keep local security to a minimum since these kids have trouble enough using screen readers to navigate windows without extra crap getting in the way...

But why try and prohibit users from working on their own machines? Is it to make their system inventory based copy protection more practical? If major OEM's go for it, what will it mean for small-time system integraters? Won't that lead to an increase in proprietary part useage by major OEM's...

Oh, ATX soft-off won't work, but it shuts down fine when i hold the power switch down for a few seconds.

what wouldn't you buy used?

i'd have trouble recomending the use of used condoms i think. you really don't know where they have been. I'll generaly trust a machine put togather from used parts under my bed more than i would one from emachines or somthing. It's a gamble, but it can be worth it. I recently picked up 4...

Windows ME updates configuration files every boot-up!

that was driving me nuts for a while, before finding out that older versions of norton are not compatable with newer via chipsets. The system would get a little flakey, so i'd put norton on, and that in turn would make it go totaly to hell. it's kinda funny if you think about it

Good books for linux learning

debian or slackware if you wanna learn linux mandrake if you just wanna use it It actualy took me months to get X up and running the way I wanted it, but that forced me to get real familiar with the console, which is a good thing. I still use console aps for most things when i'm on that machine

if you're a longhair (likemyself) or sweat a lot (like myself) you might wanna put somthing on your head. Sweat beads and hair falling into the mobo can't be good for it, plus i got my hair cought in a thermalake one time.

I don't even wanna think about cooling a socket-A in a micro-ATX I hope they don't give any overclocking options with those mobos, because people will be frying puters left and right.

are you using cheapie ram by any chance? I use asus personaly, but it couldn't hurt to make sure you've not tweaked any BIOS settings that don't need to be. If the 4-in-one driver gives the option of instaling the AGP driver in regular or turbo mode, go with regular. These things helped me...

Antec again - you won't believe this

call the bomb squad and have it detonated ASAP stay away from it try not to look right at it. a friend of mine did and he's now unable to control his bowls. you might want to stay in a hotel until you can get professionals to come extract it from your house. this is nothing to mess around with

Good books for linux learning

yeah, that's the one O'reilly is the publisher. I did my first linux instal with nothing but stuff i printed off the net and man pages. Check out the free stuff first. Spending money on anything for linux kinda defeats the purpose, imho.

Blue screen of death on startup!!! HELP

Even it there was a hardware problem, it's quite likely that that led to the corruption of system files and thus the BSOD. Re-instaling windows is always my first course of action. There isn't a hardware manufacturer out there that is more shoddy in their design than microsoft is with theirs.

when you first fire it up, do so with the fewest perephials installed as possiable. Get it up and stable with just HD/CD/floppy and vid. Deal with the modem/NIC and sound card later.
