I went from a G7 to an MX Revolution, and I have now gone back to a G5. I use the tilt-wheel a lot, and the tilt-action on the MX (same as G9, all other new tilt-wheel logitechs) was pretty poor. Also, the side buttons on the G5/G7 are much crisper. It's all subjective, but I'm happy with...

Chilled Out Strategy Games

Kohan and Kohan 2 didn't have a huge city-building phase, but the combat itself was slow paced and very tactical. Many different ways to build an army, with a cap of 20 units at any one time, although it never felt like a limitation. Probably my favorite RTS ever, and largely overlooked.

Time for a new gaming mouse: MX 518 or the G5?

I've owned the G7 and the MX Revolution, and I have to say I like the tilt-wheel on the G7 (same as G5) far, far better. I'm pretty sure the G9 uses the same tilt-wheel (side scroll) as the MX Rev. It feels very loose and sloppy, and the scroll speed varies even when I fix it in the software...

Dell has the XPS1210, 12" laptop with a Geforce 7400. It's pretty nice. A bit heavy, but feels solid.

XP OEM Disc, Activation, How to go about it?

After about 10 installs on the same system over the course of 3 years, my Dell OEM XP finally stopped being able to validate, even over the phone. Would anyone have an explanation for that?

World of Warcraft and a 7900gt

I must be doing something wrong. I have an A64 3000+ at 2.5hgz, 2gb RAM, and a 7800GT, and my FPS in WoW at 1600x1050 is usually in the 40-50fps area, and if its a city, we're talking 20-30fps. This is with 2X AA and AF, and performance mode in the drivers. What's going on?

eVGA 7800GTs so loud!!

I can't say positively, the Zalman VF700 seems like it might fit in an SLI setup. In the "silent" mode, it's definitely silent.

Geforce 7800 GTX Temps

I put a VF700 on my 7800GT for noise reasons, and it works like a champ. I hit 62C under full load, but normally I'm in the 52C range when playing games. And that's with the fan on the "silent" setting, in a case with zero fans.

Maybe, maybe not, but where they would previously haggle a bit over prices, he stood rock solid at $559. And it coincided with the outlet price on the monitors rising from $498 to $559. And I was quoted a 1 week lead time, rather than a few days.

I just got off the phone with a Dell Business rep and he told me those deals are a thing of the past. He said demand far exceeded supply, and they have been told there is no longer any discounts available. Take it for what its worth.

I'll check fan placement. It might be a bad fan. The noise changes tone and volume frequently, which might lead me to believe the fan is dying or defective.

Skyhanger, check out the Zalman VF700 VGA cooler. I picked one up from SVC for about $30 shipped. It's silent, and it cools a lot better than the stock HSF.

Validate my Gaming Rig Selections - Take 2

Why not get the eVGA (Jetway) motherboard that comes in a bundle for free with the 7800GT? It's gotten good reviews, including from anandtech. I paid $450 for a 7800GT and the SLI motherboard. Might save a few bucks.

For $399, you can get an EVGA NF4 motherboard, 7800GT, and a copy of BF2 from newegg. You might want to look into that. I just picked up the EVGA SLI NF4 board and 7800GT card for $450.

Don't hold your breath on the same kind of deals from Dell as we saw earlier this year. In their most recent earnings call, they stated that they got burned by heavy discounting, and it did not have a positive effect on earnings. I would expect fairly conservative sales for the next few months.

Shipping kills the outlet price though. Unless there is a "free shipping" coupon for the outlet, you're better off with the $444 for the new monitor.
