Well so far it appears that the virus has been killed - the often ignored step to getting the thing killed is to make sure you turn off the real System Restore on all drives, otherwise it just keeps coming back.
Now that the virus has been removed there is still a problem to view the contents...
Yeah we took the safe mode route from the beginning but the virus still runs.
It seems to block out desktop icons and if you go to the programs via the start button nothing is listed.
I did manage to get malwarebytes running by telling my mother to browse for it through My Computer...
My mother has reliably informed me that her computer has the "Windows Restore" virus - I've been trying to help her remotely after reading some solutions on the net which generaly include downloading a program called RKill and once it's done its magic running Malwarebytes.

Coincidentally my Gateway FX replaced my trusty Inspiron 9300 and by comparison it was like greased lightning.
The Gateway FX is now approaching the end of it's "gaming laptop" life but continues to be a very decent machine.

OK going to try the driver that you linked above - it seems I'm using a driver dated from last year at present.
I normally close all applications - even tried closing AVG and Spybot but doesn't really appear to make any difference.

I'm just cheesed off with the GT240 as it really doesn't perform as well as the 9600GT, which I expected at the very least, with a bit of marginal improvement into the bargain.
Well I have the 1GB DDR5 version and can say in reality (as opposed to marketing or benchmarks) the 9600GT performs better in my system... by a reasonable margin...I'm not too impressed at all really and that's me being nice here.... :(
I recently installed a GT240 into my GF's PC for a bit of gaming - mainly via Steam.
I normally play CS:S, TF2 and L4D 1&2.
I'd read that the GT240 was a reasonable performer (for the price) but in this instance I can honestly say it performs like a dog....

I'm over 35, probably carrying 10~15lbs too much (6ft and 205lbs) and depressed that games just arn't as much fun as the used to be - that's getting older for ya!
