Is the CPU in my laptop getting throttled during Prime95?

Thanks for the replies. I did a little more research and it appears that it is settings within the Sony BIOS that control throttling. As far as I can tell, they are not modifiable by the user. There is an app called Vaio Control Center that has settings for the fan. "Aggressive,"...

Is the CPU in my laptop getting throttled during Prime95?

I'm running a Sony Vaio Pro 11 with an i5-4200U processor and 4GB ram. The clockspeed of the processor is 1.6 GHz. I decided to run Prime95 to see what the temperatures in the laptop would get up to. For the first few minutes, it ran at essentially full speed and 100% cpu usage...

2.5" SATA SSD vs. M.2 SSD for a laptop

Interesting. But wouldn't you expect at least different heat and power consumption given that it's a completely different size, form factor, and connection to the motherboard?

2.5" SATA SSD vs. M.2 SSD for a laptop

Say you have the option of using either M.2 or 2.5" SATA. Assume computer (laptop) only needs a single drive, and 128GB is enough. Are you better off with an M.2 or 2.5" SATA? Seems the considerations are heat, power consumption, and speed. I can find out about speed by looking at...

When do refreshed ThinkPads come out?

I'm in the market for a PC ultrabook, but I see that the new line of ThinkPads, like the X240, came out in September-October of last year. Is that the typical season for new models to be released? If so, I might wait a couple of months and stick with my 2nd generation Core-i3 notebook until...

Anybody in DC/NoVA have Comcast for internet?

I currently have Verizon FIOS and am thinking about switching b/c Comcast provides faster service at a lower price. Anybody in here live in the DC/NoVA region and have Comcast? Any thoughts on speed/reliability? Also, could somebody tell me what sort of ping times you get using...

What upload speed necessary for max performance remote desktop?

Thanks for the info. Computer I am using is at my home, and I am remoting to work computer over the internet using Citrix Receiver. Sounds like either 35/35 or 105/10 would provide the absolute max performance in terms of bandwidth, many times over, and that beyond that my latency and the...

What upload speed necessary for max performance remote desktop?

Wasn't really sure where to post this, so I thought this might be a good place. One of the main things I use my home internet connection for is accessing my work via remote desktop using Citrix Receiver, and then using office-type desktop apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook. Obviously...

BIOS vs. Windows Software for CPU FAN CONTROL?

Thanks for the info. Not at my computer right now so I can't check whether Asrock operates the same way, but I did notice that the fan profile that I set via the software tuning utility continued to work after I exited the software, so maybe it's similar to Asus.

BIOS vs. Windows Software for CPU FAN CONTROL?

Yeah the 4pin fan connector is attached to the 4 pin CPU fan motherboard header. According to documentation that I can find, both the fan and the motherboard support PWM. And the fact that the software fan control works fine seems to confirm that.

BIOS vs. Windows Software for CPU FAN CONTROL?

Thanks for the input. I figured bios was probably preferable for that exact reason. Guess I'll keep trying to get it to work....

BIOS vs. Windows Software for CPU FAN CONTROL?

I've got an i7-4770S CPU in an AsRock Z87E-itx motherboard. CPU cooler is a Noctua NH-L9i, which has a 4-pin fan that supports PWM. It is plugged into the 4-pin CPU fan header on the Z87E. Amongst the experts on this board, is there a preferred way to control the fan speed? The Z87E bios has...

Downloaded Win 8.1 ISO from Microsoft. Does it already have Update 1?

Assuming the hash values match is it 100% certain that no malware could possibly have been injected into the ISO?

Downloaded Win 8.1 ISO from Microsoft. Does it already have Update 1?

I bought and downloaded the Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft online on Friday night. Going to install it today. Is there any way to tell before installing whether it already has the Update 1 included? If it doesn't already have it, I'd slipstream it in before installing. Thanks.

Question about ASRock motherboard driver installation

I'm doing a build this weekend with an ASRock Z87E-itx and i7-4770S (using integrated GPU, LAN, and Audio). The ASRock page has a long list of drivers: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z87E-ITX/?cat=Download&os=Win8a64. It's been several years since I've done a build so I have a few...

Where to download Win 8.1 iso to make a USB installer for a new computer?

Ok so basically the only way is to buy the actual DVD and then make a USB installer from that? Ridiculous.

Where to download Win 8.1 iso to make a USB installer for a new computer?

I am planning to install Win 8.1 on my new build. I do not currently own Widows 8. All I have is an old laptop with Windows 7 on it, which I never plan to update to Windows 8. I don't actually see a way on MS's website to download a Win 8.1 ISO for a fresh install. I've found this Win 8.1...

If it could handle those types of task + Youtube, it would actually meet my needs.

Gigabyte H87N supports CPU voltage offset?

Nope, not intending to underclock. Just want to undervolt to decrease heat and power consumption.

Gigabyte H87N supports CPU voltage offset?

Anybody know if H87N supports CPU voltage offset? I know the Z87n does, but it also supports overclocking, which H87N does not. Any advice appreciated.

Is Nvidia GTX 750 capable of 4k @ 60 hz over DisplayPort?

I got started thinking about this because a new Samsung 4k (TN) that does 60 hz for $700 is coming out sometime this month, supposedly. Obviously, not sure if I'll get it, but just thinking ahead :)

Is Nvidia GTX 750 capable of 4k @ 60 hz over DisplayPort?

Thanks again for all replies. Yes, it is DisplayPort I'm interested in. As previously mentioned, the EVGA GTX 750 has DP output: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-D...s=evga+itx+750. It would be only a single monitor. Not used for gaming. Sounds like the consensus is that it should be able...

Is Nvidia GTX 750 capable of 4k @ 60 hz over DisplayPort?

Thanks for the responses. Key part of the question is whether it can handle 4k at 60 hz, as opposed to 30 hz, though. Also, over DisplayPort 1.2. I've read some articles saying GTX 750 can do 4k at 60 hz over dual HDMI, but not over single HDMI. So specifically I'm seeking confirmation...

Reduce max TDP of i5-4670K by undervolting/underclocking?

A NUC or Brix would suffice for my needs, as far as power is concerned, but for literally like $50 more than I would pay for a NUC, I can build my own, and it would be quad-core and user-upgradeable, unlike the NUC. Also, I could probably make it quieter. Also, the hobbyist in me just wants...

Reduce max TDP of i5-4670K by undervolting/underclocking?

Thanks to both of you for the responses. Very helpful. I will definitely be using low voltage RAM and a low power SSD (planning on a Samsung 840 EVO, which I understand is among the lowest power consuming SSDs available). I'll go ahead and rule out the "T" model and either just get a 4670...

Reduce max TDP of i5-4670K by undervolting/underclocking?

I'm thinking about doing a mini-ITX build in an Antec ISK-110, which has a built-in PSU of only 90W (might be able to swap it out with a 150W PicoPSU). I've read success stories from people using cpus with max 65W TDP in the ISK-110. So at first I was thinking I would get an i5-4670S or even...

How does monitor choice affect PSU choice?

Should monitor choice impact PSU choice? I assume not since the monitor is not powered by the PSU, but I guess requiring the graphics card to power, for example, a 4K display instead of a 1080p display might use up extra power from the video card, and in that way the display may effect the...

Custom build or should I just buy a NUC?

OP here. Lots of good info in this thread. Size isn't much of an issue. Nor is cost. I definitely have room for an mATX case. Noise is actually more of a concern than size. That Antec ITX solution looks pretty decent, too. Would an i5 do decently in that thing, or would the thermals not...

Custom build or should I just buy a NUC?

Thanks for all the input. Was hoping to have an excuse to build something powerful, but sounds like the consensus is that it would be of no benefit to me. If logic prevails I'll go with the NUC... If logic does not prevail, maybe I'll end up building something anyways ;)

Custom build or should I just buy a NUC?

Thanks for the input. Do you think for the office-type tasks that I mentioned, I would even notice a difference between the NUC and the custom build? Like, would moving windows of MS Word around, or opening that 5th PDFfile, be noticeably faster? Or would the performance differences be...

Custom build or should I just buy a NUC?

Thanks for the reply, but Chromebox isn't an option. For the time being, MS Office is an absolute requirement. So to me the question really is whether the custom build would have any meaningful benefit over the NUC.

Custom build or should I just buy a NUC?

Haven't built a PC in years but have recently gotten the itch to build one. However, my needs are pretty basic -- I'm essentially an "office" type user. Excel, Word, Outlook, web browsing, youtube, etc. At heaviest use, I might have MS Outlook, 4 instances of Word open, 2 instances of Excel...
