Why not just take the SSD back out, use that little sata to usb cable it comes with or an external enclosure, plug it in via USB, and see if the MBP recognises the disc to format then? If it doesn't, see if you can use another mac (not pc) to format the drive (as an external disk). If it is...

I think the top spec laptops hold value better, even if they start from a higher cost the percentage of value holds better because they date more slowly. I think this is mostly due to CPU and GPU being more future-proof at a higher spec, and these aren't upgradeable. The Airs and 13" MBP...

One way to think about refurbs is that its been put through the full suite of hardware and software tests before it goes out the door. I would treat refurbs from the apple store as new for all practical purposes
