Discussion AMD raytracing - will it ever improve or even beat RTX?

Question GPU pricing should clearly be higher across the board, but by how much?

Right now, the prices are solely determined by miners and they are gobbling up almost all the graphic cards. That's the reason why 5700XT is selling for more than 6700XT on NewEgg. 6700XT is clearly better in gaming, but has comparatively lower Ehtereum mining efficiency.

Question How fast will the 3080Ti sell out?

I saw an eBay listing for a lot of 100 3700 Founder Edition cards and from a legitimate seller. Asking price is $150,000. We really have no chance until Ethereum cools down (unfortunately it's hitting peak price every day this week).

Question Do you think GPU stock/prices will get back to normal before end of the year?

This happened around the same time as Ethereum prices shot up. Used 580s are selling for $300-350 these days. This madness will only end when Ethereum falls back below $500 (hopefully soon), or when the difficulty of mining increases threefold at current price level (which may take longer).

It certainly is. I am hanging in with an R9 290, and an RX 470 8GB, which can do 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 gaming to some extent. In a normal market, I'd be running a custom Vega 56. For now, though I am just hoping that my current cards survive, since there are no replacements at reasonable price...

Several custom Polaris cards came with DVI-D. I have an 8GB RX 470 (Sapphire Nitro) from last year with a DVI connection. Hopefully some Vega 56 variant will have it too. I do plan to upgrade monitor soon, but am waiting for a good 32-34" 4k or 3440x1440 monitor with proper HDR support/BT 2020...

Nvidia and Freesync... never?

AMD is using VESA Adaptive Sync already. Freesync is just what they call their IP in the GPU which implements adaptive sync. Nothing on the "Freesync" displays use proprietary AMD tech. They are all pure displayport-AdaptiveSync compliant monitors, and the only reason they don't display VRR...

Yes, HDR works now with 17.4.2 driver. Pixel format has to be 10 or 12 bit, which means 4K RGB can only be at 30 Hz. 4K YCbCr 4:2:2/4:2:0 can have higher bit color format at 60Hz. This is an HDMI 2.0 spec limitation. Now that Windows supports HDR, more and more video players should start...
