Hi Folks -
Well I have a small home file-server. What I have done since I built it is connect it to a 2nd router which has no internet, it's lan only. When I want to access the file-server, I change networks so I can access it. Then I change back to the router given to me by my isp to get back...
I am wondering, about those services like feed43.com, that allow you to create an rss feed from a page that does not natively offer one. I could see where that could be very useful, as you could create feeds from pages that don't normally have them.
However I am wondering about privacy - if you...
In virtualbox you can use bridged mode for networking, which basically bypasses the host os and deals directly with the network adapter. In nat mode the vm would get an ip from the host os.
I had some questions about the approach to take regarding using virtual machines. I guess it might be different for everyone depending on needs.
I have seen it recommended by some, to keep the host system clean and only install the bare necessary software- then do everything in vm's. Is this...
Opensuse 13.2 - I created a 6 gb ext3 partition (with my partitioner in windows).
I booted the suse install dvd, intending to install it to the 6gb partition I created.
During the install process, suse is proposing to chop up my hard drive into 3 or 4 partitions (home/swap/whatever else)...
10-4 , the thing is- since I replaced the sata cable, my drive has no longer been vanishing, so your issue may be different from the one I had (not sure)
Just wondering if there is a way to unlock a bitlocker encrypted drive from windows server 2003? Since bitlocker is not included in server 2003
Thank you
Well the disk check completed normally and no errors were found on the drive. I guess it was the sata cable- the last thing I tried, because I figured it was the least likely.
So I guess there was nothing wrong with the drive rather it was a bad sata cable.
How often do sata cables go bad...
My last test - replacing the sata cable - the system has been running the disk check much longer than with any other thing i've tried so far, normally it had disappeared from the system by this point, but it's still running.
This was my last thing to try before I assumed the disk to be going...
I downloaded a hitachi drive diagnostic tool, ran a surface test, and it passed. But when I run the windows check disk, it always causes the drive to disappear from the system until reboot.
I still need to try changing the power supply connector to a different one.
Also, there is a small 70...
Were it any of these, wouldn't the 2nd 3tb have vanished as well? (which it never did, but also I never used it didn't even decrypt it). I had it in the same case as the problematic one until a day or so ago.
I have a 3tb sata hard drive that is vanishing from the system seemingly at random-no traces. Then upon reboot, it's there again acting normally for awhile, all data intact.
I've changed the drive to a different sata port- problem persists. I have 3 things left to try:
-check windows update...
Try resetting the bios to default values then restart. If that doesn't help, try plugging the hard drive into a different sata/ide port whichever it's interface is.
You could then try booting to a cd/usb and testing the memory. If the memory tests good, you could put the drive in an external...
I'd just as soon not use a cloud service.
Maybe better to keep the file server offline, and use an old laptop or computer to be the ftp server? I have an old laptop I can use - I set up the ftp and browsed via network to the files on the server that I want to share to myself on the ftp, it...
i once threw all the wires i have on the floor of my apartment and spent the evening organizing them into groups/binding them etc - i'll never let my wires get disorganized again o_O
maybe he has ddwrt on his router - i use it and there is vlan functionality (though i know little about it but have done some reading on it after viewing this thread)
is a vlan actually a viable security measure? i read that it's more to segment traffic
You are saying, that if his server is on it's own vlan, and that server gets a virus, that the virus cannot spread from that server to other machines on his network?
Why does it need internet access for windows updates? It's just a file server, I assume keeping that machine off the net helps to secure it.
The only thing is (I hadn't thought about this before) if I wanted to set up an ftp server or something, to share some files to myself when i'm not...
ok here's what I did:
on the "server" I opened my firewall and blocked outbound tcp, blocked udp- except I made a rule to allow udp on port 3389 (remote desktop port)
blocked icmp & icmpv6
went into properties for ip and changed the default gateway to something on a different subnet...
If I have a small basic windows-based home file server or nas, how could I keep it off the internet, while allowing it lan access only? I see no reason to have that machine on the internet.
Thanks
tower for fileserver and video transcoding seems like a strange combination in one box - seems like file server and backup would be more logical in the same box? (not sure)
you have 2 separate boxes for a windows home server and a file server? don't they do th same thing and fill the same purpose?
Regardless of what solution you wind up going with regarding faster usb etc, I'd still take that computer, there're 100 different things you could do with it
I was just curious as to how many computers some of you have and what the designated purposes of these computers are, and why you have things set up this way?
For instance, maybe a home file server, then another machine for backups, then possibly another for a small multimedia pc, etc ...
Gotcha- look if it's just as well, I could use the "everyone" group right? I mean it's my own small private network, only myself on it - so I am everyone I guess o_O
If a person had even one other person connecting to their network though, I could see where using the "everyone" group may not...
So if I set a share and used "Administrators" account group, since all my users are administrators, shouldn't the share show up properly (and be accessible)?
thanks for your time by the way
smitbret - thanks for the thoughts. i'd actually want to think that it'd be fairly simple, but it turned out not that way - it got kooky-twighlight-zoney on me - it'd share, then after restart, not share - then i'd change a setting-it'd share again. was it this box?that setting?did i restart...
I have a small 2-computer network, 1 computer is a server to share files to my laptop.
When trying to share a folder from the server, it seems I can only get it to work by choosing to share with "Everyone" otherwise my laptop can't access the folder(s). Laptop can see the share, but upon...
Greets-
My apartment has open unsecured wifi. I have a router with ddwrt - which I have used to draw in the open wifi, repeat the signal with my own virtual ssid which I have secured.
Now then, I have created a small 2-computer network connected to my router. One computer is a server to...
There's a place you can order just the pcb board - they need to be an exact match.
I tried that with a 320 gig hd that went bad in 2008 - I finally ordered a pcb in 2014 to try to fix it, but it didn't fix the issue mine is a different problem.
Anyway if you're interested I can find the...
Gday -
When I plug in my usb external drive (encrypted with bitlocker) I get a dialogue window that says "you need to format the disk to use it" whereas the bitlocker window used to appear for me to enter my password and decrypt the drive.
I normally click the "safely remove hardware" icon...
I've been working with this some - the router has dd-wrt on it.
I can get my router to repeat the apartment's signal in both client bridge, and repeater bridge modes (both bridged modes)
But cannot get it to work in client, or repeater modes.
Basically, it works fine as a transparent range...
Mushkins - thanks for the reply - in ddwrt, is "repeater bridge" what i'd be wanting to do?
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge
Also, if the primary router is using wireless n, can it still work out if my router's wireless g?
thanks alot
It seems like that I remember a tab in ddwrt where you could set up virtual SSIDs, it's been awhile since I played with it, maybe that didn't work in tandem with repeater mode - i'll have to get the router out and start working with it again to refresh my memory.
Thanks for that link i'll read...
Peripheral question - Re: security -
I know that when connected to a network that others are using there is always that question of wireless privacy. Would doing what you guys have described improve upon security when connected to a public or semi-public network?
I don't mean in terms of...
Hey Joe - thanks for the reply - yeah it makes good sense. I can't remember now as I've not used that router in awhile but I think I flashed ddwrt to it - if not then I can, and I know it has a repeater mode because I've played with it before.
I hadn't even thought of that idea- thanks both...
Fardringle - thanks for the reply - the way you explained that seems as though it should be pretty common knowledge for someone with networking experience - unfortunately mine is basic at best.
I know a router can broadcast a signal that devices can connect to - but how would I get the router...
Hey folks, well I have a networking question:
I have a laptop (1) that I connect to the internet with, through a network used by other people in my apartment building, so it's not my private network.
I have a laptop (2) also connected to the above-mentioned network. I am preparing to...
