Slot loading CD-RW drive?

I believe the Apple Powerbooks have 'em, but that doesn't help unless you can figure out the maker of the drive. But yes, very cool :)

Recommend a good laptop for a college student

I'd suggest you go as far as UXGA, but that alone would push up the screen cost significantly (and the notebook price). SXGA is a good comprimise. XGA is far too limiting at least for my uses. Fast processor speeds on notebooks that have things like "SpeedStep" enabled would be a bit useless...

Hmm.. sorry, I read SVGA instead of SXGA. But, having just bought a UXGA notebook, I'd say it's great. Fits so much on the screen. If things are too small, set the DPI to say 120, and windows will scale everything up appropriately I personally don't find text too small on the 15" screen, since...

Can you make a "backup" of a DVD w/ a DVD-Burner? (like the PIONEER A03)

Probably not worth it. Unless a DVD burner burns dual layers, if you back up a movie, you'd stop around where most low end players pause to switch layers.

Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepads (Original) Game Port Version Under Windows XP... Will they work? Thanks in advance for FB

Works, but I never daisy chained the gamepads. By the time I wanted to try, they only sell the USB version!!! I think the problem is that they start disabling buttons when you daisy chain (not enough signal wires I guess).

Err, will copy regular CD's? I'll assume you meant CDROMs. You can use an analog cable that goes from you cdrom drive to your soundcard, or rip audio digitally with DAE (digital audio extraction). If the drive doesn't support DAE, you must use the analog cable. If you can play back a audio cd...

What specs for a dedicated game server?

Keep the CPU speed reasonable (500-866 is just fine, more if you want tons of players and servers), and 512MB should be plenty (more if...). A fast disk might be useful (initial loads and all), but more memory is better the rest of the time.

Multiple Game Controllers = Problems?

My experience is that most games emumerate the input devices attached. Then they blindly pick the first one they find. You might be able to renumber the IDs on your controllers in the control panel, but that doesn't seem to always work. Your milage may vary. When in doubt, unplug.

Worth a memory upgrade?

If with 128MB of memory you feel it's decent and "gets the job done", then I don't see a reason to dump more memory into it if it isn't going to improve your particular usage of it. Then again, you are running XP, so unless you plan to do more with it, I think 128MB is adequate for running just...

figured it out! thanks guys!

First, connect the comp directly to the cable modem as mentioned before. If that works, open up port 110. If it doesn't, check your ISP. They might have changed the email server name (PacBell did this to me last month without notifying anyone).

When building the Xbox why didn't Microsoft keep the Sidewinder Game Pad design???

I used to think the XBox controller is a bit huge, but now I just think it's simply big :) You get used to it, and I like how it doesn't make me move my elbows in like the Dreamcast or PS1/2 controller.

DVD writeable standard soon?

I'll chime in. A burner that burns and reads every standard will make it a non-issue. The market will decide. There aren't that many, tough the lasers/read/write burn mechanisms might need to be more expensive to support the standards. DVD readers may have to be upgraded however.

Older VGA monitors (IBM, 94,95 models), will they work on XP?

One thing comes to mind: After reinstalling the drivers (after booting to save mode and nuking the video drivers), and it still doesn't work, make sure your monitor settings desdcribe your monitor. If not, get some monitor INF files.

Computer not Posting sometimes, can't figure it out

Sounds like it could be some contact problem (heat makes things expand). Open up your case, ground yourself, and tighten/reseat all cables, PCI cards, etc. If the PS fan is working, you are getting power, but you might consider to swap in a known working PS if the above doesn't work.

Going from 256MB to 1GB = Significant boost?

When I edit images (some drawings and photos), I can use almost 512MB easily. But memory usage doesn't always stay up there. Basically, the answer I have to give is that if you already have 256MB of RAM, and have to ask to see if you need more, you probably aren't doing anything that will come...

Whats Better? GF2 GTS or GF2MX? (read)

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't they chop off 2 rendering pipelines and lower the clock speed of the memory for the GF2 MX (Half the theoretical fill rate at the same clockrate?). My vote goes to the GTS. It's fast. If it runs out of memory, it'll be very slow. The GF2MS is somewhat slow...
