desktop shortcuts that dont have rights to use ?...

Are you using XP Home or Professional? Home has weird permissions when you've set the users documents and settings to be kept private. I would bet that what's going on is when one of you creates the icon it's permissions are being set so that they're only for that one user, not all admins...

    Reinstalling XP...

Before you reformat and reinstall try just a straight reinstall of XP. You can do this without losing all of your data and it should reset XP back to a normal post installation state. If you're worried about losing data on a reinstall remember you can install over a Windows installation...

Another XP Pro install problem - 24hrs of Lies!

Try to narrow this down by replacing parts. Do you have a spare PATA hard drive to use? What about some extra RAM, like somebody mentioned try some cheap-o stuff from CompUSA if you need to.

Personal Firewall for Windows 2003 server.

Why do you want to run a personal firewall on a server box? If it's being used as a server then get a server version of your favorite software firewall. If it's being run as a personal computer then don't use 2003 server. Better yet, don't use pirated software and then complain about it.

How to get Windows XP Pro to remember login and password automatically?

Make sure that under AutoComplete you're letting it save user names and passwords. If you accidentally chose to stop letting IE save your passwords then this might be dissabled - even if other autocomplete functionality remains intact. Internet Options > Content > Auto Complete

Windows Components - What are they all for?

The most important thing is that it's very unlikely that you need any of them. IIS is a web server. The other components are networking services (all 3) that you won't need unless you have programs that specifically require their functionality.

Whose going to buy Apples new OSX, Tiger?

I'd buy it if it were available on x86 hardware - which I've heard it just might be in the near future. This would make a lot of sense to me, let Apple compete with Microsoft based on their OSs features not the cost of the underlying hardware. Sure Windows will have way more software available...

    Bluetooth plus 802.11x?

Hey, I was wondering if there are any PC card adapters that provide bluetooth and 802.11 support. I'd be interested in a card that could give me access to a WLAN/Wi-Fi hotspot plus communicate with a bluetooth cell phone.

setting up a VPN server using win2k pro?

You can host a VPN session on a Windows 2000 Pro system. The limitation placed on Pro is that it can only have 3 incoming connections. If you setup a new network connection using the MS wizard you can enable incoming connections via the internet or other devices (parallel/serial ports, modems...

Windows Home Server - Missing piece of the puzzle?

Am I the only one who thinks that MS ought to have a windows server designed for the home? With Windows XP offering easy multiple user functionality and Microsoft focusing a lot of its energies on home networking, it would seem like there ought to be a server product for the home. This product...

    Networking a CD-RW....

One possible comprimise solution is to logon to your computer with the CD burner remotely. If the computer with the burner is running WinXP Pro you could use remote desktop, if not you can get AT&T Labs' VNC for free, try google. That way you could burn CDs running Nero as if you were at the...

I actually had a similar, perhaps the same probelm with GRUB a week ago or so. Even using Partition and Boot Magic I wasn't able to get rid of GRUB, although I was able to fix up the partitions ( I was moving from Linux to Win2k Pro). The only way I could get rid of GRUB was with fdisk. Try...

    What does LSA Shell do???

As something of an aside... It seems like all these networking accessing components of Win32 and other applications ought to be known by these firewalls. I don't mean that the firewall should decide whether they get network access but it would be helpful if the companies producing them (Sygate...

NTFS a good thing or not ?

I don't think it is clear that he/she's using NTFS. Just because "the guy who sold me the PC" says it's a problem with NTFS doesn't mean it is. "The guy" might just be some kid working at compUSA who doesn't really know what he's talking about.

NTFS a good thing or not ?

What OS are you using? I've never seen the boot-up scandisk run on any computer using NTFS although I have seen it on Win2k/XP using FAT32. If you're using FAT32 and win2k/XP you'd be best off converting it to NTFS (use "convert" on the command line). Check the FAQs, there is one about FAT32...

    Killing processes from command prompt?

I think their is a built-in utility to do that in WinNT but I can't remember for sure. There is a good program for doing that called PSKill that can do it over a network as well. Search for PSKill, or better yet PSTools on google (PSTools contains some other neat utils as well). Based on your...

    windows xp sharing???

No, don't enable the guest account that's a bad idea (sorry Utterman :) ). The problem is probably that you're using a blank password when not using admin, or that the "regular" account you're using doesn't exist on the other account. The ideal solution is to make sure that your user accounts...

    Replacement for PGPdisk?

If you're just worried about the security of things on your computer you can use WinXP's (and 2k) built in file encryption (EFS). Win XP Pro MP3 instability

Is your system stable when playing other media types (.wav, .wma, .avi, .rm, etc.)? Try to figure out if this is just an issue with mp3s or with all audio/video. Dual Heads for Hard Drives?

I agree that it would increase costs, but by how much? Hard drive prices have dropped quickly if you look at GB/$ and drive capacities continue to rise. However performance is still relatively weak, extremely slow compared to the rest of a modern PC. Personally I'd sacrifice a few GBs of...

    Dual Heads for Hard Drives?

I was thinking about this a few days ago and was wondering if it was possible. Could you have two heads on a hard drive, say one for reading and one for writing (or both for either)? It would seem like this is possible since you could position them on opposite sides of the magnetic disk and...

Windows Protection Error BSOD O/C woes

You should try upping your voltage settings if you haven't already, they might make the overclock more reachable. Otherwise, don't overclock. You just can't push your computer any farther than it can go and perhaps you've pushed it too far. Good luck, and welcome to the Anandtech Forums.

If you're already experienced in doing Win98 networking making the jump to Win2k isn't that drastic. In fact, you'll most likely learn why you should've been using 2k all along. Since you won't be using Win2k Server you won't have to worry about learning about Active Directory and all that...
