desktop shortcuts that dont have rights to use ?...

Are you using XP Home or Professional? Home has weird permissions when you've set the users documents and settings to be kept private. I would bet that what's going on is when one of you creates the icon it's permissions are being set so that they're only for that one user, not all admins...

Reinstalling XP...

Before you reformat and reinstall try just a straight reinstall of XP. You can do this without losing all of your data and it should reset XP back to a normal post installation state. If you're worried about losing data on a reinstall remember you can install over a Windows installation...

Another XP Pro install problem - 24hrs of Lies!

Try to narrow this down by replacing parts. Do you have a spare PATA hard drive to use? What about some extra RAM, like somebody mentioned try some cheap-o stuff from CompUSA if you need to.

Personal Firewall for Windows 2003 server.

Why do you want to run a personal firewall on a server box? If it's being used as a server then get a server version of your favorite software firewall. If it's being run as a personal computer then don't use 2003 server. Better yet, don't use pirated software and then complain about it.

How to get Windows XP Pro to remember login and password automatically?

Make sure that under AutoComplete you're letting it save user names and passwords. If you accidentally chose to stop letting IE save your passwords then this might be dissabled - even if other autocomplete functionality remains intact. Internet Options > Content > Auto Complete

Windows Components - What are they all for?

The most important thing is that it's very unlikely that you need any of them. IIS is a web server. The other components are networking services (all 3) that you won't need unless you have programs that specifically require their functionality.

I'd buy it if it were available on x86 hardware - which I've heard it just might be in the near future. This would make a lot of sense to me, let Apple compete with Microsoft based on their OSs features not the cost of the underlying hardware. Sure Windows will have way more software available...

Ghosting RedHat 7.3 = no boot... GRUB...

NTFS a good thing or not ?

I don't think it is clear that he/she's using NTFS. Just because "the guy who sold me the PC" says it's a problem with NTFS doesn't mean it is. "The guy" might just be some kid working at compUSA who doesn't really know what he's talking about.

What OS are you using? I've never seen the boot-up scandisk run on any computer using NTFS although I have seen it on Win2k/XP using FAT32. If you're using FAT32 and win2k/XP you'd be best off converting it to NTFS (use "convert" on the command line). Check the FAQs, there is one about FAT32...

If both computers are on the same domain you can just log on as a domain user and you won't be prompted for user/pwd. Otherwise just create an account on the both computers with the same user/pwd.
