windows10 wont RDP to work PC.

Can you ping your workstation @ work? I've experienced cases with Windows 7 (not yet using 10 for work) where it would establish a connection, but not pass data through it properly. When it would happen, I wouldn't be able to ping an IP address on the inside of my work network.

Need advice on new PC build

I wouldn't worry about Win10 drivers, if it runs 7 fairly well, Windows will probably have a driver for 10 built into the system. Honestly, unless you are a major AMD fan, i'd look at a core i5 or i7? Also, what resolution are you gaming at? 8GB of video ram seems like it will be wasted...

Retasking old Socket 775 for mother

I think the video card is probably so she can go with Dual Monitors, most C2D machines with onboard video didn't have that as an option. The 9600 will drive 2 just fine for office applications; and when doing accounting work, 2 monitors is a godsend. +1 for the SSD upgrade being a huge boost.

Got The Upgrade Bug...

GTX 970 will run 1440p fairly well with decent (not max) settings in most games for $330-350. You can bump up to a GTX 980 for $550, but it's a steep climb. I honestly wouldn't worry about all the people having fits about the specs of the 970; if it does what you want it to do, then it's fine...

Good language for a 12yo to learn with?

Only problem with PHP for this (and personally, I use a ton of C/C++ knowledge to code my php) is that he was looking for something to learn that could be gaming oriented, and I just don't see that on the PHP side of it. That said, LAMP is actually pretty cool, and very useful, and FREE! :)
