Well, have never bought from Mercata, however I have used PayPal. PayPal seems pretty safe to me, just use your credit card and it pays them in the form of an actual check from paypal or deposits direct to a savings/checking account. Sign up get 5 bucks free too =) Shameless attempt at 5 bucks...
I signed up a few days ago, no problems here, the guys I talked to on the phone got me set up quick, though I think I know how to use dialup networking by now =P
