Anyone here have hands-on experience with 2-in-1 laptops?

I have a Lenovo Miix ... it seems to me that most 2in1's are heavier than a normal laptop ... even taking the keyboard off still means you have a heavy tablet. How about a 4GB Chromebook for browsing and a 10 hour battery life? Then perhaps one of the cheaper Chinese windows tablets for...

Buying a laptop from USA for use in UK : sensible?

Power supply is probably dual voltage but the plug will require a simple adapter. Keyboard layout will be slightly different e.g. the @ and " keys will be in different locations ... also obviously a $ key instead of a GBP key

    Intel June Canyon NUC

I got an NUC6i3 about 2 years ago and was not that impressed. I thought that with the Intel name the PC would work OK straight out of the box but it seemed to me that Intel had rushed the PC to market without thoroughly testing it. There were immediate problems and the BIOS had to be upgraded...

Thinking of installing Win10 32-bit on low-spec "laptop" (more like netbook)

I have a small minix desktop with similar spec of 2GB/32Gb. 2 or 3 years old now but W10 installation size is still fully manageable ... fully updated W10 results in emmc ssd having 13GB used and 15GB free ... about 1.5GB of the 13GB used is for portable apps and other software, files etc. For...

Thinking of installing Win10 32-bit on low-spec "laptop" (more like netbook)

I may be wrong because I tried several different methods until I got it to work, but from what I remember it had to be a USB drive and not a microSD ... also it may have been that the process didn't recognize an existing USB drive but required a USB drive to be inserted only when prompted...

Thinking of installing Win10 32-bit on low-spec "laptop" (more like netbook)

I had a similar situation a year or so ago when I upgraded from W8.1 to W10 and thought of the W10 32bit version but no drivers available. My knowledge is very limited so some of the following may be wrong but my comments;- 1. In Disc Cleanup have you tried the "clean up system files" option...

Chromebook or something similar for basics and Minecraft?

The advantage of having a chromebook for a child is that there is less risk of the OS being messed up; there is less risk of downloading malware etc and even relatively cheap chromebooks usually have very good battery life. I have happily used an 11.6" 4GB chromebook for several months. I find...

I was told I own too many laptops... :|

I've been thinking I would like a new, cheap 11.6" laptop for Linux. Are there any suggestions, please, for a suitable laptop ... or would any of the cheap Win10 laptops be OK?

    Chromebook buying advice requested

I use a desktop for serious stuff but I've happily used an Asus C202SA for some months now around the house as an every-day, rugged, easily portable information browsing source; newspaper reading; entertainment machine. Excellent battery life and almost instant-on means I can use it throughout...

Worth upgrading Sager from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

Perhaps this should be in the OS forum but it seems relevant here. I have been thinking about upgrading my windows 7 PC to windows 10 and then reverting back to windows 7 so that I can take advantage of the free upgrade if I want to re-install windows 10 in future e.g. perhaps when extended...

    Incredibly slow laptop

To put this in context ... the issue is that "Anything from opening control panel to launching a browser or even file explorer happens with a 3-4 second delay, sometimes more." I've got an 8 year old netbook with a single core Atom N270, 2GB of ram and win10 installed. On start up the CPU goes...

    Incredibly slow laptop

My own views ... a cheap laptop with dual core Celeron N2840, 2GB of ram and 32GB eMMC with compressed OS of win10 works OK ... none of that sort of lag that you describe. The dual core N2840 is a bit better than the dual core AMD E1-6010 ... but difference in performance should not be...

Atom X3/X5/X7 Windows device discussion thread

Had a stopover in Hong Kong a couple of days ago and made an impulse buy of an Asrock Beebox ... Win 10, N3150, 32gb eMMC, 2gb ram, 4 USB 3.0 ports, 2 HDMI, 1 DP ... USD215 compared to $250 on Amazon...

Atom X3/X5/X7 Windows device discussion thread

Kaido, many thanks for the Minix information. Normally I don't buy relatively unproven Chinese brands because of previous bad experiences but I've no regrets after now buying the Minix. I am impressed with good, solid quality build and I think the only PC I've bought that was literally...

Atom X3/X5/X7 Windows device discussion thread

I want to get another cheap mini pc so this thread and the Atom Z3735F thread at http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2424482 are very useful. I already have an HP Stream Mini and found that I had to upgrade the 32GB SSD because W8.1 with Bing with updates and the software I needed to...

Playing with the HP Stream mini

How bad is the virus? If you can boot into win8.1 then you can use win8.1 to create a system restore image which would give you a clean factory install of win8.1 with bing. Alternatively you could try upgrading from win8.1 to win10 and then doing a clean install of win10 from MS's win10 iso.

Cheap laptops with 2gb ram/32gb SSD

Rather than misunderstanding, I was trying to keep the post short because I tend to get long-winded. However if anyone is interested I'll amplify further:- A) I agree the recovery partition is there in lieu of the manufacturer's installation media. However, probably your're aware that if you...

Cheap laptops with 2gb ram/32gb SSD

On an impulse I bought one of these cheap 11.6" 2GB/32GB laptops. My experience:- 1. Win8.1 with Bing; C:drive partition is 19.80GB; Recovery partition is 9.00GB. Uses WIMBoot therefore Recovery partition cannot be removed. 2. After setting up and activating Win8.1 ... C:drive 5.6GB used...

Cheap laptops with 2gb ram/32gb SSD

It appears not possible with any of the cheap 2GB/32GB laptops. I think all these laptops have the 32GB SSD soldered to the motherboard.

Cheap laptops with 2gb ram/32gb SSD

I assume you're going to replace the 32GB SSD with the new samsung. Probably no need to clone the existing SSD ... what works with an HP with Win8.1 with Bing on a 32GB SSD is to create a Win8.1 System Image Backup on a USB drive ... remove the old 32GB SSD and install the new SSD ... boot from...

Cheap laptops with 2gb ram/32gb SSD

I'm far from being an expert but, from my experience, I suggest it is not as simple as that. For example, I've yet to find a review which gives details of the installed size of the OS after all current updates etc and with the laptop having reasonably usable software. I've put together a few...

Cheap laptops with 2gb ram/32gb SSD

I happily used a netbook for many years when travelling; XP just about fitted on a 4gb SSD and that was OK for me. Now it seems I can't trust XP and I haven't found a version of linux that works well with a VPN. Therefore I'm tempted by the cheap 2gb/32gb laptops. For my uses, I definitely...

Playing with the HP Stream mini

As in my recent post, you'd have to backup everything and then do a complete factory reset from HP's recovery media. This should give you W8.1 at about 8GB before updates with about 13Gb free. Don't allow W8.1 to update but immediately do a W10 upgrade from a USB drive using the M$ media...

Playing with the HP Stream mini

My understanding is that the only way to get a free, activated version of W10 is to upgrade from W7 or W8.1. The upgrade installation of W10 also allows for the possibility to easily revert to the original W7 or W8.1 therefor the old OS and recovery partitions are still there. However after 30...

Playing with the HP Stream mini

I emphasize I have not yet upgraded my HP stream mini to W10 therefore I may not be correct. I'm waiting for another few months for the bugs to be sorted out. But I have upgraded two of my family's W7 PCs to W10 and I think it should not be difficult to do it yourself. As I understand it, in...

It seems you can download either a Windows 32 bit iso or a 64 bit iso from here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 for a clean install. I think that Windows 8.1 32 bit installed size can be quite a bit smaller than 64 bit. It might be worth trying 32 bit Windows 10 on...

Playing with the HP Stream mini

Interesting that a cable's been found and that it works with an SSD. However perhaps it should be noted that there may be problems if trying to use it with an HDD unless another OS is installed. The compressed WIMBoot system used for 8.1 on the mini is only advised for SSD's.

I've investigated further and agree, the winsxs folder is the issue. But it is an even bigger issue for this type of windows installation on a small 32GB SSD which uses the WIMBoot system supposedly to save space. To quote M$ .......... In a standard Windows installation (without WIMBoot)...

I have limited knowledge therefore I'm OK if anyone wants to tell me I'm talking nonsense ..... but I've been trying to understand how windows and all the other installed software fits on the 32GB SSD. Playing with the HP Stream mini

I'm no expert but I think 8.1 includes a hiberfil not only for hibernation but also as part of the fast-boot procedure. If you don't need hibernation you can delete hiberfil but you then probably have a slower boot. Alternatively I think you can reduce the % of ram figure but I'm not sure by how...

Playing with the HP Stream mini

I registered just to say thanks to all those who have contributed to this thread. I bought the HP mini for occasional use watching videos and carrying out simple Office type stuff and thought the advertised 32GB SSD should be OK for that if I added a 32GB SD card for storage. I'm not a tech...
